Down the road live two elderly farmers different as night and day. Nannie Rawley is an organic farmer who specializes in apples. She is a strong woman, yet her heart is sad for the little girl she lost so long ago. She is cheerful and friendly, though deep down inside, she still has trouble understanding Gods plan, and why her daughter was born with so many defects lived such a short life.

Next door to Nannie is Garnett Walker III. Widowed 8 years ago, he spends his time trying to reestablish the American chestnut into the Appalachian landscape. He is a cranky man, angry at Nannie for growing pests and weeds with her organic No Spray Zone. What we find is that Garnett is really just a lonely man. He finds excuses to terrorize Nannie, and she knows that. However, its really the only human interaction he gets. Garnett has his own pain in the form of a son he disowned many years ago.

A widower and retired teacher, he focuses his attention on creating the perfect chestnut-tree hybrid, all the while casting disapproving glances at his neighbor, an Earth Mother type named Nannie Rawley.

Everything about Nannie eats away at the fabric of all that Garnett believes in, and they clash often, particularly over his use of pesticides that rid his beloved trees of pests, while she's declared her apple orchards a no-spray zone. Garnett agonizes over every move Nannie makes, although he convinces himself that she's nothing more than his cross to bear.

As Nannie tells Garnett, "Everything alive is connected to every other by fine, invisible threads. Things you don't see can help you plenty, and things you try to control will often rear back and bite you, and that's the moral of the story."

Garnett Walker conducts a daily battle to restore the American Chestnut, commonly thought of as dead due to the blight. He wants to restore the landscape to the one which his father and grandfather knew and built. However, God has given him a cross to bear by granting him Nannie Crawley as a neighbour. Nannie is the local champion of organic farming, and her bid to avoid any drop of herbicide or insecticide touching her apples drives Garnett mad. These neighbours are also fiercely divided in their respective attitudes towards God, but theres always the most implacable of snapping turtles there which seems destined to clamp these two old folk together.

In her depiction of forest life, Barbara Kingsolver reminds you of Edward Rutherfurds glorious novel of this year, The Forest, especially in the portrait of a community where everyone seems distantly related to each other.

The story of Garnett Walker and Nannie Rawley, who seem bent on thrashing out the countless intimate lessons of biology as only an irascible traditional farmer and a devotee of organic agriculture can. As Nannie lectures Garnett, Everything alive is connected to every other by fine, invisible threads. Things you dont see can help you plenty, and things you try to control will often rear back and bite you, and thats the moral of the story.

Garnett, an aged widower is struggling to revive the presence of chestnut trees along the East Coast before his death. He spends his free time in a constant battle of misunderstanding and differing opinions with his neighbor, Nancy. Through a series of forced encounters, their opinions of each other begin to change...

The third narrator in thestory is Garnett Walker III, an eighty-year-old man trying to breed a new variety of chestnut tree, which was the source of his family's wealth until the blight killed all the trees. Garnett's relationship with Nannie Rawley, his organic apple-farming neighbor, provides the comic relief in the novel and characterizes the novel's optimism towards humans' relationship with nature.

The remaining couple of this triptych consists of long-feuding neighbors Nannie Rawley and Garnett Walker III, as portrayed under the chapter headings Old Chestnuts. Nannie, like Deena and Lusa, exists to obey laws of ecology and practice natural land management. The nemesis of her existence is the bug spray that wafts across to her organic produce and may eventually cause her cancer, such as that which killed Garnetts wife. Chemical bug control leads her into topics of carrying-capacity laws and all sorts of ecological wisdom she feels compelled to shower upon Garnett at the slightest provocation.

The OutsiderThe Sniper

Grame Lay Liam O'Flaherty

In "The Outsider", an important character is Karl, a surfer, a trailblazer who goes to Kaimara to have a new adventure. In "The Sniper", an important character is the Republican sniper, who reveals a great courage as he fights for his belief. Karl is very important because he is the protagonist, he knows omnisciently about waves, he is brave; most significantly, he betrays his lover and override her future. On the other hand, the Republican sniper is also exceptionally important because he reveals high intelligence when fight against enemies, he is extremely determined and he symbolizes bravery. Both characters are significant to me as they are equally courageous in different aspects and they both do remorseful things to people they love.

Karl is a surfer who comes from America and he desires to surf freely in Kaimara. In my memory, Karl is "tanned face" and has "blue eyes". He is important because he reveals his strong characteristic, his tremendous surfing skills and he becomes an exemplary surfer, as he is not afraid of the waves. In the beach, "he pulls himself towards the wave and he felt a multiplicity of sensations, exhilaration and anticipation". He is important as a protagonist because he gives me the feeling that he is determined and courageous. His quality forces me to praise him and be jealous of him because he seems perfect.

Order College Papers on Describe an important character in the texts and explain why he/she is important.

Another thing makes Karl important is he falls into the ocean of love with a native girl called "Justine". As the story unfolds, "they had known each other for five months" and Justine is pregnant. Unbelievably, Karl leaves "with nothing left", leave Justine and her unborn baby alone in the town. This time Karl is important because he reveals irresponsibility; he overrides Justine's miserable feelings and really provokes me. As a reader, I will definitely oppose against Karl and give my compassion to her. Karl vanishes his lover's future as he symbolizes loneness and unfaithfulness. Therefore, the writer implies that people should not trust others easily by using Karl, a man who gives no evidence of caring for Justine's plight, as an example.

On the other hand, the Republican sniper really surprises me because his "face is the face of a student, thin and ascetic, but his eyes have the cold gleam of a fanatic". He is important because he is a brave warrior who accepts an obligation of killing the enemies for Republicans. During the assignment, this sniper reveals his courage as he faces against enemies individually. This character also shows his cruelty when he "fires at a woman who informs his position to his enemy". Another thing that makes this sniper important is his reveals his intelligence when he "tricks" his enemy by making the enemy "thinks that he has been killed". When his enemy gets "tricked", he adeptly kills his enemy with a revolver. This time he is important because he is clever, determined and strong. He makes me feel that he is a hero. However, the sniper soon finds out that the person he kills is his brother. Throughout the story, he is important because his encounter reveals that war creates pain and implies that those people who fight for what they believe will often hurt the people they love.

These two characters, Karl and the Republican sniper, are important because they both reveal great resolution in each story and they both have the wrong attitudes towards something. The encounters of the two characters teach me that the world is a world of complexity; we should not believe in others' plights easily. We should never be too fanatic in our belief because fanaticism will bring wars and therefore creates pain and sorrow.

Dear Emily,

We were at dinner the other night and I wore the pearls that Robert had given me last Christmas. I knew that it was risky to do so but I swear to God that I couldn't resist it! They looked so beautiful lying in that little velvet box and as soon as I set my eyes on them I knew that I had to have them around my neck. They reminded me so much of my dear Robert.

We were chatting idly when the subject of pearls came up. One of the ship's passengers who was sitting at our table went by the name of Mr. Kelada. He revealed to us that he was an expert in that field and could instantly tell the difference between the genuine ones and the cheap imitations.

It was obvious to me from the beginning that Elmer and Mr. Kelada did not get along very well. They are both very proud men and sure of themselves and what they say. A heated argument ensued, and both men wanted to prove that he was superior to the other. They were quarrelling vehemently and their faces had become flushed with exasperation and irritation.

Cheap Custom Essays on Somerset Maugham Mr. Know All

Elmer had evidently said something that bruised Mr. Kelada's male ego, and Mr. Kelada wanted to prove his expertise to us. To my utter horror, he pointed at my pearls and proclaimed that the chain I was wearing would never be worth a cent less than it is now. I tried to conceal the chain by slipping it inside my dress but my attempt was unsuccessful. Mr. Kelada went on and informed us that my pearls were genuine. Elmer disclosed that he hadn't bought them for me and wondered how much they were worth. I was beginning to feel disconcerted about the direction that the conversation was taking. Mr. Kelada believed that the pearls could be worth no less than fifteen thousand dollars.

Obviously I had to come up with some explanation as to where I had obtained the pearls from when Elmer saw them a few months ago. I told him that they were fake and I had bought them at a department store in New York for only eighteen dollars. Of course Elmer had believed me, as he had no reason to doubt my word.

Elmer and Mr. Kelada were arguing over whether the pearls were real or not, when suddenly Elmer exclaimed that he would bet a hundred dollars that my chain was an imitation. Mr. Kelada accepted this challenge and asked to take a closer look at the chain. I was becoming increasingly nervous as the seconds ticked by and when Elmer asked me to take the pearls off I felt my whole body go numb. By now I was aware that Mr. Kelada was indeed an expert and I was terrified that he might expose me. I pretended that the clasp wouldn't come undone and prayed that they would leave it at that.

My prayers went unanswered, for before I knew it Elmer had jumped out of his seat and undid the clasp, handing the string of pearls over to Mr. Kelada. My heart raced as I watched Mr. Kelada examine the pearls with his magnifying glass. When he looked up with a victorious smile on his face I knew then and there that I was done with.

I don't know exactly what happened next, but I assume that Mr. Kelada had seen the look of horror that I was unable to hide on my face. I saw him struggle, trying to decide whether he should claim his victory or not. To my astonishment and disbelief, he flushed deeply and regretfully admitted that he had been mistaken. I didn't know what to make of this. He knew that the pearls were genuine, yet lied to protect me. All I know is that it was terribly chivalrous of him and I shall always be indebted to him. I was so confused and yet I felt immensely relieved that my secret was safe.

Mr. Kelada's hands were trembling as he handed over his forfeit - a hundred dollar note. I couldn't bare to watch as Elmer told him off for being so sure of himself. I retired to my room, claiming that I was not feeling well and had a headache. All night I tossed and turned, musing over what had just happened and how close I had come to being exposed. I knew that I had to thank Mr. Kelada for saving me from what would have been a very unpleasant revelation, and so after the sun rose I crept along the hallway to where his room was and slipped an envelope containing a hundred dollars under his door to pay him back for all the trouble I'd caused, and hoping that he would somehow know how extremely grateful I was.

The Relationship Between Critical Thinking & Decision Making

There is a unique relationship between critical thinking and decision making. I would first like to introduce you to the definitions of the two terms that I have found through some sources from the internet. First, critical thinking is defined as the process of purposeful self-regulatory judgment. In one article I found they had a definition as generated per an expert consensus that stated "We understand critical thinking to be purposeful, self-regulatory judgment which results in interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference, as well as explanation of the evidential, conceptual, methodological, criteriological, or contextual considerations

upon which that judgment is based." (Facione, 18, pg.14) Now the definition of decision making is the cognitive process of reaching a decision.

The material in this course defines the two terms as follows. The first being critical thinking as a definition of "awareness of a set of interrelated critical questions, ability to ask and answer critical questions at appropriate

times, and the desire to actively use the critical questions." (Browne, Keeley, McCall, Kaplan, 001, pg.) The material also defines decision making as the process in which one must make a decision based on the information at hand. Now from these two terms I would say that I believe that critical thinking is the ability to come up with a solution to a long term problem. I think decision making is the process in which you must decide on a course of action for a current problem or issue that must be decided immediately.

The relationship between these two terms is both terms both involve making a decision. Most businesses are faced with issues on a daily and long term basis and good management must use these two methods in order to keep the organization running effectively. By using critical thinking your making a decision by analyzing a situation to come up with a solution and using the decision making process to finalize the solution. However, with decision making you are making a single decision based on an individual problem versus an overall problem. This leads me to believe that the benefits, of being a critical thinker helps an individual become a stronger manager. If an individual can look at all the aspects of a decision before making it they will have a better chance of making the correct decision to generate the solution to the problem.

In my current job at Nuconsteel we are utilizing both of these processes everyday. We have currently gone through a re-organization which is still in progress. Once a month a group of managers will get together and work on details on how we are going to fix organizational problems of increased sales and limited resources. We have generated more sales than expected and are experiencing more growth. At this stage the group of managers must use critical thinking because the decisions that we make will directly influence the outcome of the company's ability to operate in the market place. This takes the actions and critical thinking of many people to come up with solutions to this problem. On the other hand we have to make decisions daily on smaller issues that are either a yes or no answer. These decisions will fall under the decision making process because they are quick fast solution given to a straight forward problem that has to be addressed. Most of these decisions are instruction based in order for the employees to continue on with their task to accomplish the work that they are given. Many issues arise in deciding whether we will estimate certain types of construction projects and provide engineering solutions for problems we have with current projects. I believe that I am a critical thinker and decision maker because many times I have to do both processes. Due to the nature of our business I must make many quick decisions on construction projects. On the other hand I have to come up with solutions in which will help us maximize the resources we have currently with manpower and production to accomplish the overall goal of the organization. The decisions must be well thought out before implementing since they can have a great impact on how productive the group I manage operates. In order to be a successful manager one must be able to be both a critical thinker and decision maker.

'Run Lola Run' 18th August 0

If you're the type of person who likes being kept on the edge of your seat and glued to the cinema screen… then 'Run Lola Run' is the movie for you. This captivating movie has more twists then a lifetime, with the use of extraordinary techniques and visual effects this movie is brought to life. German director Tom Tykwer spins three "what if" segments, each time with the same basic story line but with different outcomes, leaving the viewers perhaps with the choice of how the film ends…tragedy or happily.

In 'Run Lola Run' time becomes a matter of life and death, as today is unlike any other day. Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu) who is a small time courier for a big time gangster is working a standard pick up/drop off job, when things don't go exactly to plan. Manni's girlfriend Lola (Franka Potente) was meant to pick Manni up, but was late due to her moped being stolen. One stroke of bad luck leads to another, and by the time Manni calls Lola he is in a massive dilemma. Manni's boss is meeting him in 0 minutes to collect the 100 000 marks off him, that Manni suddenly doesn't have. Lola's desperate plan Find money somehow, somewhere In 0 minutes… "Run Lola Run".

The visual effects and flashbacks in the movie are what make 'Run Lola Run' such a fascinating movie. Time is a crucial factor as there are always clocks present throughout the film. There are clocks that swing back and fourth across the screen, with the camera tilting upwards and we plunge into a gaping hole- as if swallowed by time.

Buy cheap film review - run lola run term paper

At the start of the movie Lola is running, and is in a cartoon effect. This use of animation shows the true effect of a game-like movie, which seems to be Tykwer's main technique in the movie. Games can be played over and over again; if you lose you can always try again. Tykwer's hypothesis was "If film is like a game, then why not give Lola a second chance, or a third, as in this movies case". As an accomplished cinematic stylist director Tom Tykwer doles out some magnificent film tricks that keep the story going and the audience's interest up.

One of the most moving effects used in the movie is when Lola collides into all soughts of different people and then shows droll and nasty fast forwards of those people's lives. During these fast forwards he gives us, in 10 seconds a series of shots that depict each person's entire subsequent life, often to a hilarious effect. Such as the bank employee who is perceived as a sensible and quiet young woman, when actually this isn't the case, as the fast forwards reveal shocking and exotic bedroom action.

Another well produced visual effect in the film 'Run Lola Run' was the significance of the color red. Red is the symbol of Lola's passionate love, Lolas phone is red, so is the bag with the money. The ambulance that runs over Manni is red, Lolas hair is bright red, and there are red lights featured in the film. But the true significance of the color red is Manni and Lolas love for each other, as when Lola and Manni are about to die, the screen fades to red. Lola is the player who must counteract the forces set against her winning the game. Camera angles and split frames show that these two are a pair, emotionally and visually.

The most amazing thing about 'Run Lola Run' is that so much depth and action has been managed in a mere 80 minutes. What's so incredible about the film is the intelligence that Tykwer brings to the script. As Lola repeats her attempts at securing the money she passes the same people and the same places but at a slightly different time, these few seconds making all the difference to the outcome of the subsequent events. The different outcomes touch on some heavyweight themes but Tykwer wisely leaves them to float around, rather then forcing them upon us.

No description of 'Run Lola Run', no matter the depth, can convey its true impact when viewing it on a cinema screen. 'Run Lola Run' will leave you out of breath and wishing it wasn't over so quickly. It's a suitable balance between those annoying films which require you to spend all of your time thinking instead of watching, and those brainless blockbusters. 'Run Lola Run' is a romantic action film without the explosions.

With its extensive amount of thrills and fun, this is one film that you definitely cannot miss!!

Writing a novel is a very respectable and honorable achievement. But writing a novel that has captured the hearts of millions while creating so much commotion within the literary world; has created a whole new genre of writing on its own. In this level one can find the works such as The Odyssey or The Iliad, but on top of the list, one can find The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie. This novel has within it so many aspects of prose literature that most authors couldn't incorporate them into any of their writings. It is agreed that Caroline G. Heart's review of the novel is nothing short of a clear-cut evaluation of this notable piece of literature.

One of the factors that Christie incorporates into this novel was the unique way that shepresents the clues to solve the murder. The uniqueness about the clues is when read for the first time; they were taken in a different context. For example, on page 41, "Ackroyd was sitting as I had left him in the arm chair before the fire." Upon first reading the novel, the reader assumes that Dr. Sheppard (the one who said the quote) said this literally, for before he went home, Dr. Sheppard and Mr. Ackroyd were conversing in front of the fire. When the doctor left, Ackroyd was still sitting in the chair in front of the fire place the way Sheppard had left him when he decides to go home. Seeming irrelevant to the murder unless read in a different context and perspective. At the end of the novel, after countless of false accusations, the reader learns that Dr. Sheppard is the murderer. When reading the line over again, one incorporates the new information to create a whole new perspective on the situation, turning this sentence into one of the most noticeable clues.

More over is the controversial yet astonishing ending of the novel. The way that the book ends is with the detective uncovering the murderer, but to the reader's surprise, the murderer was the least expected character, Dr. Shepard. The reason as to why this ending is so "touchy" is because of the time period the novel was written in and because of the dogmatic rules that authors had to abide by in write those novels. One of these rules is that the murderer cannot be the narrator. Yet Agatha Christie shatters this rule with glee. The surprise ending is what made this novel. To further illustrate, all novels have the clues, the murderer, the suspect, the characters, and the setting, but what makes a good mystery novel is its ending. No one expects the narrator to be the murderer! With this gutsy ending Christie truly showed her talent and love for writing hence holding a spot as one of the best mystery stories in everyone's heart.

The final reason to support Carolyn G. Heart's review is the development and the life-like characteristics exhibited by one of the main characters, Hercule Poirot. The former detective has certain characteristic traits that are so life-like, that most anyone can relate to in some form or other. The one trait that stands out the most is Poirot's "self-passion." Self passion in this sense can de defined as one's thinking he/she is more cultured than everyone else. To illustrate, throughout the novel Hercule Poirot is always mentioning his superior knowledge by saying, "Nothing escapes Poirot," or "Poirot knows all." These concise quotes portray a very broad character trait, "Self Passion." Now, what makes Hercule so realistic is that every person who reads this novel is able to connect him to someone that the individual knows in his/her own life. This ability on Christie's side; enabling people to relate the fictional characters in the story to actual people in real life, creates a certain bond between the book and the reader. Very few books are able to perform such a phenomena, consequently making this novel number one in many people's hearts.

Agatha's extraordinary talent of writing is seen time and time again especially in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. By slyly encrypting the clues with the double edged sword of context reading, the astonishing ending, and the ability to create life-like characteristics for the characters, Agatha truly has created a masterpiece that deserves every bit of admiration and reverence that crosses its path. So by crossing the fictional qualities of life and the intrigue of mysteries, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is born, a novel that will never be forgotten.

Have you ever had feelings about something that's later changed? In "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Conel, Rainsford finds himself in that position. This short story revolves around three main conflicts of man. Man verse Nature, man verse man, and man verse himself are those conflicts. General Zaroff and Rainsford are the characters, which the story is mainly about. Rainsford is a famous hunter, and General Zaroff is a fan of him, also a hunter.

The First conflict, man verse nature, takes place when Rainsford falls off his boat, and since it was dark he couldn't see much. He made his way to an island owned by the crazed General Zaroff. So here Rainsford is one this weird guys island trapped, and what he comes to find out he will be changed by.

The second conflict, man verse man, was when General Zaroff sent out to find the "man" who has been on his island, and when he comes to find it's the one and only famous Rainsford. So he takes him in and gives him dry cloths and food. Zaroff started talking about his love for hunting which lead to him telling Rainsford about his new hobby, of hunting humans. Rainsford comes to find that the only way to escape this island is to play Zaroff's game. Rainsford did not like the idea of hunting humans, and thought it was wrong and wanted no part

Have you ever had feelings about something that later changed? Almost all of us have said Oh thats easy or I could do that any day! and then find out that the task is prey himself, corrected his faults and formed new opinions about hunting and standing up for the rights of animals. Rainsford is an excellent role model for positive change!

Write my Essay on The most dangerous game for me

, The Most Dangerous Game is a

story about a man named Rainsford whom gets stranded on an island with a crazed

general. This general is named General Zaroff. Rainsford was an excellent

hunter who wrote many books about hunting. General Zaroff was a fan of

Rainsfords books, so he immediately knew who Rainsford was when he found him.

General Zaroff let Rainsford in and treated him to good food and plenty of rest.

Zaroff was talking to Rainsford about hunting, and then Zaroff explained his

passion, he hunted humans because animals were no challenge. Rainsford did not

like this and tried to avoid Zaroff. Soon after this, Zaroff gave Rainsford a

choice, it was either Zaroff would hunt Rainsford for three days or Rainsford

will get whipped in the dungeon of Zaroffs home until he agrees to be hunted.

Unwillingly, Rainsford picks to go hunting and hopes to survive the three days.

If he did live, he would be set free with money and new clothing, so Zaroff says…

The Importance of Choices in The Most Dangerous Game Can a man be driven from humble humanity to gross inhumanity by circumstance or situation? What effect do ones choices and training have on his morals? At some point in our lives we will all be forced to answer questions similar to these, and two characters in Connells story The Most Dangerous Game are not exempt from these life decisions. Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff are both wealthy, both are hunters, and eventually both men are put into situations where critical choices must be made. The choices the men make are derived from different situations, but both have similar results. Initially the setting of the story is on a yacht in the Caribbean. Rainsford is involved in small talk with his friend, Whitney, and the conversation is about their favorite hobby, hunting big game. The fact that these men could afford a hunting trip to the Amazon speaks of their wealth, and these men have apparently taken several trips together. General Zaroff is not unlike Rainsford in this respect. From his childhood, Zarof...

The short story "Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell is the suspenseful tale of the ultimate hunter, one who hunts humans in a sick, twisted game of cat-and-mouse. The one of the overall themes of the story, as I personally saw it, was a warning of becoming too obsessed with a hobby and the chase for excitement. In the story Zaroff is a hunter who has been hunting for so long, and has become so adept at it, that he now finds it dull to hunt even the most dangerous animals in the world

Researching the costs of launching

It is no question that the cost of sending a child to college or university can be astronomical. It is very important to renegotiate the material relationship once launching occurs. In most cases, parents are the financial aid when it comes to paying for the cost of post-secondary education. There are several things that must be considered when deciding how much money to put aside for this step in a childs life.

One major cost for post secondary education is obviously the cost of tuition. The amount of money required for tuition depends on two things the course being taken and where it is being taken. Tuition for college is considerably less than the tuition cost for university. Tuition for college is on the average of $500 a year, whereas the tuition for university is, on average, $5500 a year. Courses in college range anywhere from one to four years and at a cost of $500 a year we are looking at a cost between $500 to $10,000 just for the tuition. Most courses in university are four years in length but can extend as long as 7 years. At a cost of $5500 a year, sending a son or daughter to university can cost the parents anywhere between $,000 and $8,500 for the tuition alone. This can put a major dent in the bank accounts of the parents, but there are more costs to consider.

Another major cost for post-secondary education is the cost of books. Books are getting more expensive every year; the cost of books for a student taking computer engineering ranged from $100 to $170 a book.

Help with essay on School

Post-secondary students have anywhere between 4 and 8 courses a semester. Considering that the books cost an average of $15 a book, the total cost of books can range from $540 to $1080 a semester. Given that there are two semesters in an academic year, the total cost for books each year ranges from $1080 to $160. This isnt the end of it, there are also course notes, lab manuals, and solution manuals that the student must purchase. These items usually dont cost very much. The most expensive item would be the solution manuals that can cost up to $50. These small items are nothing compared to the cost of housing.

If the student is going to a post-secondary institution located far from home then the cost of housing will be a very expensive part of sending a student to school. The cheapest form of housing is living on campus in residence. The cost of living on Res can range from $00 to $500 a month. Given that there are eight months in a regular post-secondary year, the total cost per year to live on residence is between $400 and $4000. If the student is living off-campus in an apartment the cost will be more expensive. In Ottawa, reasonable one-bedroom apartments range in price from $600 to $00. Apartment leases are usually for a period of one year so the total cost to live off-campus for one year can range from $700 to $10,800. Considering that a student is going to university for four years, the total cost for a place to live will be between $8,800 and $4,00. However, there are also the groceries and bills to consider. If living off campus, a student will need the internet, a phone with a good long distance plan, most likely will have a TV, and might also have to pay for hydro. A student can get basic cable, high-speed internet, a phone plan, and hydro for a total of $150 a month. The average cost of groceries a month for one student is $00. Adding this up, the cost for rent, bills, and food ranges from $,000 to $47,400 a year.

There are also extra expenses to consider such as transportation to and from home during the holidays, transportation to and from school (if living far from campus), lab coats, paper, pencils, laundry, a student card, etc.

Considering the cheapest scenario where a student goes to college for one year, taking 4 courses a semester and lives on residence the total cost would be $580. Considering the most expensive scenario where a student goes to university for 7 years, living off campus with 8 courses a semester, the total cost would be approximately $116,000. So when sending a son or daughter to a post-secondary institution, parents should be willing to put aside anywhere from $580 to $116,000. Parents with children who want to become doctors might want to buy some lottery tickets. There are, however, scholarships, bursaries, and student loans that will bring down these costs by a great deal. Also, most students take summer jobs to help pay for these expenses. In either case, it is very important to renegotiate the material relationship once launching occurs.

Critical Thinking for Indonesian Language

The use of language is the primary building block for communicating in any civilization. Language is a vital tool for almost every aspect of our lives; therefore, it is imperative that society continues to seek new techniques and ways to effectively teach Language. The author A. Alwashilah wrote an article titled Critical thinking crucial to global success. (00, may 0) The Jakarta Post. The author writes about the perception that the language curriculum of Indonesia is ineffective because of the methods of teaching the Indonesian language. The author identifies some possible reasons for the perceived problems with the countrys language program and some solutions that could fix what might be broken. The author suggests that before any fixes occur, the attitudes of the educators have to be correct first.

The proof that most of the Indonesian people feel that the language is a boring subject is not provided in the article, therefore one can not assume that the majority of the people think that the curriculum is boring. Instead, the assumption might be that all is fine with the current language program and furthermore it is the opinion of a few that the teaching process needs changing. It is also difficult to determine if the current system has implemented steps to incorporate programs aimed at promoting critical thinking in the language studies. Therefore more data is needed to determine if the Indonesian language is ok or in need of a change.

The author seems to be convinced that the current ways of teaching have produced a system that requires results that are barometers for success, which lacks excitement and optimism. He indicates that an updated curriculum can help utilize new ideas and procedures, which can produce critical thinking in the language; which-in-turn will create more excitement for the language.

The authors articulation of the language is good, however the use of some words complicated the meaning of certain sentences. For example, the use of repetitive to describe the method of learning provides a simpler picture than the chosen word of rote. Another example is using adroit to state, Skillful thinking would result from having many in teaching language.

The authors argument that the traditional ways and methods for teaching the subject are limited and furthermore the teaching produces a respective cycle for limited teaching and learning. The argument on the principal that to obtain the ultimate goal is to learn enough of the Indonesian language to achieve the desired test results, which limits the possibility for critical thinking. The limitations in language will cause limitations in other aspects of education because language is a vital tool in learning.

The fallacy in the article is it failure to produce and data on the opinions of the majority of the Indonesian population. It is not clear whether the population feels that the subject is boring or if the system needs an upgrade. The argument that the language is boring is the view of one person, which may not reflect the opinion of others. Furthermore, there is no way to ascertain the information to determine if the nation is ready to overhaul the entire language curriculum. In addition, the author has not provided data showing that methods for producing critical thinking in the Indonesian program are not current in place.

The rational and logic that a healthier curriculum is obtainable if procedures are implemented that promotes critical thinking is sound, because it does not place restrictions on what the final result should be. The concept of learning the Indonesian language through methods that are different from the traditional way can provide a better curriculum over the long run.

The author identified several issues that could be a problem for the subject of Indonesian in the schools and universities, however it is not clear on the more damaging issue. The successful solutions to these problems depend on identifying the proper area to address first, the method of teaching or the goal for learning. After determination is made on which issue presents the greater problem, the educators can proceed with finding the appropriate solutions.

"But remember, it's a sin to kill a mocking bird". This is the one warning Scout and Jem receive when Atticus gives them their air rifles. But why mocking birds and not blue jays? Both Atticus and Miss Maudie believe it is a sin to kill a mocking bird as they "don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy". Harper Lee titles her novel To Kill a mocking bird as two of the main characters were "mocking birds". They were harmed or put in potential danger because of the prejudice about race and class in society, and that of the unknown or different. Two characters in To kill a mocking bird could be viewed as "mocking birds". They were Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. Both do not harm society in any way and both are innocent people. However, because of their ways of living, the morals and principles that they have grown up with, they are picked on by society.

Tom Robinson was a gentle, kind and quiet man. He went out of his way everyday to help a white woman, Mayella Ewell, with her duties around her home. However, being black, it was not acceptable for him to feel sorry for a white person. Because of his gentle ways, he is viewed as a mocking bird, innocent and harmless.

The inhuman acts towards the mocking bird, Tom, starts when he is accused of raping Mayella Ewell. When Tom is put to trial, Atticus proves conclusively that Tom could not have actually committed the crime he was being convicted of. However, he was still found guilty. Tom becomes the victim of white prejudice when society convicts him rather than confronts the fact that a white woman could be interested in, and make sexual advances towards a married, black man.

Write my Essay on Explain the relevance of the title of the book – pointing out who could be considered "mocking birds" and what actual/potential harm was involved. for me

The other "mocking bird", Boo Radley, is a shy and curious man. However, he is depicted as some kind of monster in the eyes of Scout and Jem. This is because Boo leads a different way of life compared to them and they do not fully understand him. It is only when Scout stands and looks from Boo's balcony that she starts to understand how he lives and why. We do not see the real Boo, however, until the novel unravels, and Scout tells of the kind acts towards her and Jem. It is then that we discover that he is really a gentle person. The kind acts towards the children are small but are precious. For example, the gifts he leaves for them in the knothole of the tree, when he mends Jem's trousers after they are caught in his fence, and the blanket he covers Scout with during the fire.

It is not until the end of the novel that Boo is exposed to potential harm. This comes about after he rescues of Jem and Scout who were being attacked by Bob Ewell. Boo kills Bob Ewell in order to protect "his children". As Mr Tate knows, the women of Maycomb would go crazy sending Boo baskets of food and sending him praise, he states to Atticus, "it's a sin dragging him with his shy ways into the limelight". So as not to "shoot a mocking bird", Mr Tate announces to the rest of Maycomb that Bob Ewell fell on his own knife.

Both Tom Robinson and Boo Radley were classed as "mocking birds" as they were gentle and shy people. Yet Tom Robinson was harmed and Boo Radley was in potential harm because of society's prejudice, and society's inability to see something from someone else's point of view. To kill a mocking bird is equivalent to committing a deliberate senseless and evil act. Who are the mocking birds in your town?

I chose to write my paper on Jean Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Abilities. I chose this

topic because I as well as many people in my family have been labeled "gifted" early on

in school. I realize that this is a measure of intelligence defined as the potential for

learning, however none of us labeled gifted have done anything more successful than

Write my Essay on John Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Abilities for me

other members of my family. I fact the opposite may be true. Perhaps a gifted labeling

made us all lazy. Nonetheless, I would like to know how Piaget's theory relates to how

intelligence is measured.

Piaget became fascinated early in his studies with the discovery that children of the

same age often gave the same incorrect answers to questions, suggesting that there were

consistent, qualitative differences in the nature of reasoning of different ages, not simply

a quanitive increase in the amount of intelligence or knowledge. This discovery marked

the beginning of Piaget's continuing effort to identify changes in the way children think,

how they perceive their world in different ways at different points in development. The

different stages postulated by Piaget help to explain different rates of learning at different

ages as well as the types of learning possible at different ages for the majority of the

population. Learning itself is seen by Piaget as a process of discovery on the part of the

individual, and learning as a formal activity becomes a system of organization, by which

instruction is enhanced by the way the teacher arranges experience. Learning is thus

experimental, and Piaget suggests that experiences have meaning to the extent that they

can be assimilated. There are two principal learning theories in psychology, one of which

focuses on the learning process while the other focuses on ones capacity to learn. Piaget

offered a biological theory of intelligence that he presented as a unified approach to

intelligence and learning. Piaget restricted the idea of learning to an acquisition of new

knowledge that derives primarily from contact with the physical or social environment.

He opposes it on one hand to maturation which is based on physiological processes; on

the other hand and most importantly he differentiates it from the acquisition of general

knowledge or intelligence which he defines as the slowly developing sum total of action

coordinations available to an organism at a given stage. Piaget had actually started out to

analyze the meaning and origin of intelligence and he defined intelligence as the totality

of behavioral coordinations that characterize behavior in a certain stage of development.

Having explained all of that I should explain the distinct stages Piaget believes that we

go through. The sensorimotor stage begins at birth and lasts until age two. At this stage,

the child cannot form mental representations of objects that are outside his view, so that

intelligence develops through his motor interactions with his with his environment. The

preoperational stage typically lasts until the child is about six. According to Piaget, this is

the stage where true "thought" emerges. Preoperational children are able to make mental

representations of unseen objects, but cannot use deductive reasoning, demonstrate

conservation of number, and can differentiate their perspective from that of other people.

Formal Operations is the final stage. This stage is typically explained by the ability to

think abstractly.

In doing research for this paper I thought I would find specific examples of how

Piaget's theory helped form standards for and develop intelligence tests. I really didn't

find much of that one resource even suggested that Piaget found standardizing tests dull

and it was while helping to develop such tests that he broke away and instead developed

his Cognitive abilities Theory. I guess one could say that Piaget has helped develop

intelligence tests by measuring what cognitive stage a child is at what age, for instance a

child of above average intelligence would be capable of thought in a stage past their

chronological age. This though seems like a bit of a long shot I feel that a true

intelligence test would have to be more specific than this.

In discussing network based, team based, boundary-less and traditional organizations,

we first want to point out the facts of each type of organization. According to Dessler,

a Network based organization is a system of interconnected or cooperating individuals. (Dessler pg. 140) He describes three types of organizational networks to include formal,

informal and electronics networks. Basically all managers and supervisors no matter what department they are in or their geographic location work together and have direct contact with one another. Whether it is a formal, informal or electronic network-based organization. The end results are all the same. Better communication, more coordinated efforts and expedited results.

The network-based organization is a far cry from a traditional one. While communication between department managers still exist to a certain degree in a traditional company. The procedure of up-channeling all ideas to one head person or small board slows down the result process. Also with no internal network present it may take days or even weeks to get a response to a problem needing addressing today. Team based organizations are a group of people who work together and share a common work objective. (Dessler, PG 17) In the organizations in our present time, teams are used as functional tools due to growing competition using these types of organizations. Normally when teams are formed in an organization in order to complete the companies business, it is completed with productive results versus an individual effort.

Appropriate Situations and Applications

A formal organizational network has been defined as a recognized group of managers assembled by the CEO and the senior executive team. (Dessler, pg. 140) This is used in organizations in the modern business world in order to keep communication flowing to let all departments know what is going on within the company as far as decision-making and activities. An effective formal network will have an impact of upper managements job responsibilities. Dessler also tells us that an effective formal network can and should take the initiative to Handle more of the inter-unit coordination the CEO might otherwise have to do, leaving him more time for strategic planning. (Dessler, pg. 140) Having networks in place allows companies to be more versatile and responsive to a changing market. An informal organizational network, Dessler tells us consist of

cooperating individuals who are connected only informally. They share information and

help solve each others problems based on a personal knowledge of each others expertise. (Dessler, pg.14) Some effective tools for building informal networks are improving personal relationships and shifting personnel to new facilities. This has the natural effect of building relationships and expanding informal networks. The next type of networking is Electronic Networking, which is described by Dessler as networking through e-mail and collaborative computer software. (Dessler, pg.14) This is an incredibly powerful tool considering it allows people world wide to collaborate on issues of importance to their organizations, and also expands the possibilities of who can participate. The last type of organization we will discuss is the boundary-less organization which Dessler defines as one in which the widespread use of teams, networks, and similar structural mechanisms means that the "walls" which typically separate organizational functions and hierarchical are reduced and made more permeable. (Dessler, PG 144) Depending on what level the company wants to take it to the walls can be taken down not only within the company, but also between the suppliers and even the customer.

This should give us a better understanding of the different types of networks and organizations and hopefully a better idea of how to maximize their potential in today's Business environment.

Organizations The Advantages of each

We've now looked at how each organization is alike and different. And some of the causes of network based organizations in comparison to traditional organizations. Now we will take a look at the advantages each can bring.

Network-based

Network-based organizations hold a distinct advantage over the other two by allowing work to be accomplished in a timely and coordinated manner. Network based organizations are not held back from accomplishing this no manner how distant the working units are from one another. Network organizations also can call on managers from different departments, units and geographic locations into one working team.

One of the most important areas of astronomy is the field of Comparative Planetology. By studying planets and other large bodies in the solar system, we learn about the history and possible future of our own.

There are nine planets in our solar system namely Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. These nine planets are classified into two groups Jovian and Terrestrial, except for Pluto which is an entirely different system. These planets were classified as Jovian and Terrestrial Because of the differences that these two types of planets have. Here is a chart of the differences between these two types of classification

Comparison of the Terrestrial and Jovian Planets

TerrestrialJovian

close to Sunfar from Sun

closely spaced orbitswidely spaced orbits

small masseslarge masses

small radiilarge radii

predominantly rockypredominantly gaseous

solid surfaceno solid surface

high densitylow density

slower rotationfaster rotation

weak magnetic fieldsstrong magnetic fields

no ringsmany rings

few moonsmany moons

Pluto is the farthest planet from the Sun and by far the smallest. Pluto is smaller than seven of the solar systems moons (the Moon, Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, Titan and Triton).

Pluto was discovered in 10 by a fortunate accident. Calculations which later turned out to be in error had predicted a planet beyond Neptune, based on the motions of Uranus and Neptune. Not knowing of the error, Clyde W. Tombaugh at Lowell Observatory in Arizona did a very careful sky survey which turned up Pluto anyway.

Little is known about Plutos atmosphere, but it probably consists primarily of nitrogen with some carbon monoxide and methane. It is extremely tenuous, the surface pressure being only a few microbars. Plutos atmosphere may exist as a gas only when Pluto is near its perihelion; for the majority of Plutos long year, the atmospheric gases are frozen into ice. Near perihelion, it is likely that some of the atmosphere escapes to space perhaps even interacting with Charon.

After the discovery of Pluto, it was quickly determined that Pluto was too small to account for the discrepancies in the orbits of the other planets and there are some who think Pluto would be better classified as a large asteroid or comet rather than as a planet. Some consider it to be the largest of the Kuiper Belt objects (also known as Trans-Neptunian Objects). There is considerable merit to the latter position, but historically Pluto has been classified as a planet and it is very likely to remain so.

We can actually determine the size of the planets through a series of formulas and by measuring the angular size of a particular planet. First, we need to convert an angular diameter into a physical one, measured in kilometers. If the angular size of an object is measured in radians, and if the object appears small in the sky, then its physical size is given by its distance multiplied by its angular size. This relation is known as the small-angle formula and is very useful in determining the size of a planet.

Terrestrial planets formed when space debris, mostly dust and rocks, constantly bombarding the young planets. This bombardment heated up the planets surface to the point where it began to melt, producing lava. Some of the original heat, though not enough to melt the planets interior, came from gravitational energy released as particles came together to form the terrestrial planets. It is known that all the terrestrial planets were made this way and therefore gave them the similarities in characteristics that they have.

The Jovian Planets are mainly composed of gases just like our sun. So with this, the formation of the Jovian Planets can be traced back to the solar nebula with fewer modifications than the terrestrial planets went through. Within the outer, cooler regions of the solar nebula, the icy planetesimals collided, building larger bodies of ice and rock. As these bodies grew to a mass a few times that of the Earth, then they drew in more hydrogen and helium from the surrounding interplanetary gas. Naturally, capture and retention of gas were easier far from the Sun, where the temperature was lower. Because of their great masses, they have kept very nearly the same relative proportion of hydrogen and helium to the heavier elements as the Sun and the interstellar medium have. This is the most likely mode of formation for Jupiter and Saturn and why they are hydrogen-rich bodies. Uranus and Neptune were simply never massive enough to accrete hydrogen and helium to the extent that Jupiter and Saturn did. Thus carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, silicon, and iron dominate their compositions.

The Impact of Schizophrenia

"Schizophrenia is a cruel disease. The lives of those affected are often chronicles of constricted experiences, muted emotions, missed opportunities, unfulfilled expectations. It leads to a twilight existence, a twentieth-century underground man… It is in fact the single biggest blemish on the face of contemporary American medicine and social services; when the social history of our era is written, the plight of persons with schizophrenia will be recorded as having been a national scandal."

E. Fuller Torrey, M.D., "Surviving Schizophrenia" "

The impact that schizophrenia has on the individual with the illness, and his/her family, friends, relatives, is huge. Life will not be the same, however it does not become corrupt, or unmanageable. It's hard to understand what the individual is going through, but with family and friend's support, life can be made a lot easier.

Cheap Custom Essays on The impact of schizophrenia

The Impact on the Individual with Schizophrenia

A)The Symptoms and Illness Itself

It's hard to anyone to imagine what the individual is going through unless they've been through it themselves. The victim may go through

Aggression, Hostility, and Violence

Not very often does the individual become highly violent, but when it does happen, it always hits the headlines, recreating the stigma of what schizophrenia is. Sometimes short violent spurts occur however, especially if the individual feels that they're being monitored, or is under and sort of stress.

Depression

Often the individual will become depressed after they realize what they are going through, or realize that their hallucinations are not real. Prescribed drugs may help relieve the depression, but often the sufferer needs professional help or counseling. However, the depression may become so serious that the sufferer is suicidal, perhaps attempting suicide.

Withdrawal

The victim will often have difficulty interacting with people and forming relationships, causing s/he to withdraw from society, to escape the "normal world."

Rejection

Often causing withdrawal, the victim may be rejected by family, friends, relatives, or anyone, once they are aware of the illness the victim has. It is so important that family and friends be supportive of the sufferer, learning to accept reality without hostility or anger towards the victim, making them feel rejected.

B)Living With the Family

Relatives are not the only people to feel the strain of living with a recovering schizophrenic patient. The sufferer also has to adjust to the situation, his illness and the changes in him, and his new position in the family.

Talking to Relatives

Sufferers sometimes find themselves fighting a barrier between themselves and other members of their family. The experiences that are part of schizophrenia seem so bizarre that there may be a degree of embarrassment in talking to family. It is hard for the victim to tell the family how they're feeling, because the family has no idea since they've never experienced such a thing before. Impatience between the sufferer and the family, possibly over whether the victim really knows what they're doing, may lead to arguments, bitterness, and problems.

Dependency

The sufferer may become dependent on the relatives he/she lives with, having a meal prepared, their laundry done, doing all the daily comforts, being the only source of contact with the outside world, and they are comforted by the nature of the relationship. This may be hard for family or spouse because it seems like they have a child to look after; however the sufferer does not really know the strain that they're putting on the family or spouse.

The Myth of the "Before" Person

It is obvious that schizophrenia changes people, and many sufferers are aware that they are not the same person that they were before the illness struck. They know that they cannot do all the same things, concentrate fully, or talk to people the same. The person no longer sees themselves as how they used to be, nor does the family or friends. It is especially difficult for a sufferer to listen to people discuss the "befores" and "afters." The sufferer needs to know that they are accepted by family and friends as they are NOW.

C) Living in Society

Society often believes schizophrenics to be crazy, violent, insane, etc, and the sufferer may be stigmatized with the label "mental or ex-mental patient" or "schizophrenic," making the victim feel alone, embarrassed, ashamed, of what people now know about him/her. This can also prevent the victim from making friends, or getting employment.
