Nabokov's Readers and Writers

Vladimir Nabokov has his ideas of what it takes to be a good reader and a good writer. He suggested a little quiz ten definitions of a reader, and from these ten choose four definitions that would combine to make a good reader.

1.The reader should belong to a book club.

.The reader should identify himself or herself with the hero or heroine.

.The reader should concentrate on the social-economic angle.

4.The reader should prefer a story with action and dialogue to one with none.

5.The reader should have seen the book in a movie.

6.The reader should be a budding author.

7.The reader should have imagination.

8.The reader should have memory.

.The reader should have a dictionary.

10.The reader should have some artistic sense.

I chose numbers , 7, 8, and 10 as the correct combination of definition that make a good reader. Nabokov believes in imagination, memory, a dictionary, and artistic sense and I agree for the most part.

A good reader must be able to identify himself or herself with the hero or heroine of the story. This is a perfect way to make a story feel like a walkthrough. As a little child I enjoyed reading walkthroughs to games; I could actually feel that I was the main role-playing character. Definitely, this is a great way to make the book a bit more interesting.

Number seven and ten are somewhat linked. I totally agree with Nabokov on this part because in order to fully understand text, one must be able to translate it to visuals. Here is where imagination comes in. if one imagines a scene and turns it to real life, one will be able to live through the plot and identity himself or herself as the hero or heroine.

Of course, in order to create a vivid and realistic scene of the plot in the story, one must have artistic sense. Without this artistic sense, the reader will just imagine something totally ordinary and dull. If not REAL artistic sense, at least the reader must have artistic imagination. By seeing the book in a movie, one can be able to create an artistic sense because he or she will learn from someone else's interpretations.

Of course, the reader should have ample memory for the book that he or she reads. I mean, what good is reading a book when one cannot even remember what it is all about? Memory is a must when reading a book.

I would have to disagree on the fact that the reader should have a dictionary. Sorry, Nabokov, but not every good reader needs a dictionary. A passage has many context clues that a good reader would naturally use to find out what a specific word means. Surely occasionally one might pop open the dictionary but only occasionally. A dictionary is for those without good memory. So if a good reader must have good memory, then a dictionary would be unnecessary.

All in all, most of my "right" answers correspond with those of Nabokov's. I agree with him for the most part that good readers should have memory, imagination, and artistic sense. The reader's mind must be balanced with the author's mind and be on the same track. If not, the reader may imagine sometime totally out of sorts from what the author meant to convey. Whatever the author might say, the reader must put it into memory, with added artistic rendering. This, along with my walkthrough example would make a good reader.
