Often people say that a person is responsible for his or her own actions and the result of those actions and decisions. In A Separate Peace, Finny a carefree, careless, dangerous attention seeker makes a decision that leads to his own demise.

After reading Gene's account of the events that led to Finny's death the reader may observe that there are three people who are all partially at fault for Finny's death, Gene, Brinker, and Phineas. However, after examining the story closer is it obvious that Phineas is the one mostly responsible for his death. Phineas creates a club "The Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session" whose membership requires that the members to jump from a tree into a river. Phineas being the cunning and shrewd person he is bullies Gene into jumping into the river. After many meetings, " the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session" becomes the center of Gene's life, which promotes Gene's destructiveness and enmity towards Phineas. Thus, when Phineas urges Gene to go to the meeting on the night of the accident, Gene is convinced that Phineas is out to destroy. In an attempt to persuade Gene, Phineas uses reverse psychology to make Gene feel guilty in order for him to follow Finny's plan. Therefore, if it were not for Finny, Gene wouldn't have come to the meeting on the night of the accident. At the meeting Finny also come up with the idea that they jump together rather then alone, risking the possibility that the movement of one of them could cause the other to loose his balance. So, if it were not for Phineas' idea to jump from the tree, Finny would never have fallen to begin with, Gene's trial would never have taken place, and he would not have found himself on that operating table. This makes Finny largely responsible for his first fall and his death.

Phineas' idea acts as a domino effect putting into play a series of events including Gene jouncing the branch and him breaking his leg the second time. which creates a series of events that lead to his death.

Finny begins to view the world through the eyes of a paranoid old man who is always seeing something covert in everything. On page 106, Finny even goes as far as to ask Gene, Do you really think that the United States of America is in a state of war with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan? This outlook is a mental facade that only succeeds in setting Finny up for a harder fall.

. Finny seems as though he will never grow up because he is so immature, with his silly denial of the wars existence, and his habit of always coming up with strange things to do just for fun

The one most to blame however was Finny himself, starting a club in which jumping off the tree into the river was a membership requirement was the first in the series of events that eventually lead to his death. If Finny had not done this none of the incidents which Gene and Brinker were at fault for would have ever had reason to take place. Consequently, the person most to blame for the death of Phineas was Phineas himself.

New signing Dean Holdsworth is likely to start up front but manager Stuart Murdoch may also blood some youngsters, including right-winger Michael Gordon, after five of his first-team squad left the club during the summer.

Ive left the door open for some of our youth team and they now have a good chance of trying to stake a claim in the first team, said Murdoch.

It will be a tough game - Crewe know the division well and will be full of confidence after their promotion last season.

Youngster James Robinson will make his Nationwide League debut for Crewe Alexandra.

The striker, who signed a new contract this summer, gets his chance because of an injury to the highly rated Dean Ashton.

Justin Cochrane, who earned a two-year contract with the club following an impressive pre-season, should be selected in midfield ahead of Neil Sorval.

And Crewe could also include 1-year-old striker Jonathan Walters, who has joined on a months loan from Bolton Wanderers.

Manager Dario Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke It is another exciting time ahead for the club and while I feel weve got a decent squad the players now have to prove it.

In the play, A Streetcar Named Desire written by Tennessee Williams, the two main characters Blanche DuBois and Stanley Kowalski are strongly portrayed as polar opposites when they are first introduced in the play. The two characters' differences are seen through their appearances, since Blanche is portrayed as a delicate moth while Stanley is portrayed as animalistic. They are different by interests, Blanche loves to be admired and pampered while Stanley likes to be more laid back and at ease. They also differ by their social status, Blanche was raised in a wealthy plantation family in Laurel, while Stanley has grown up in the poor areas of New Orleans. Williams seems to develop these differences more between Blanche and Stanley as the play continues.

When the reader is first introduced to Blanche DuBois and Stanley Kowalski, it is clear how the two characters are opposites just by their appearances. Blanche is portrayed as a pure and innocent delicate person. "She is daintily dressed in a white suit with a fluffy bodice, necklace and earrings of peal, white gloves and hat, looking as if she were arriving at a summer tea or cocktail party in the garden district (Williams, 15)." From this description the reader can assume that she comes from a rich background by her expensive taste in clothing and accessories. However, the color white that she has draped herself in makes her seem frail and timid. "Her delicate beauty must avoid a strong light. There is something about her uncertain manner, as well as her white clothes, that suggests a moth (Williams, 15)." However, Stanley is portrayed as an exact opposite of Blanche's appearance. When he first walks on stage in the play, he is "about twenty-eight or thirty years old, roughly dressed in blue denim work clothes (Williams, 1)." From this description the reader can interpret that Stanley is a working man, who seems to be laid back with his simple way of dressing. As the reader can see, from the very beginning of the play Williams has made it clear that the two characters are polar opposites, Blanche is the beautiful dainty moth, while Stanley is the rough and overbearing man.

Blanche and Stanley are also proven to be complete opposites by their different interests. From Blanche's rich and expensive appearance, the reader can guess that her interests can only due with money, clothing, and jewelry. "Look at these feathers and furs that she come here to preen herself in…a solid gold dress…fur pieces…(Williams, 6)." In every new scene Blanche is dressed or changing into a new and unique looking garment. It is also made clear by Blanche's sister that she loves to be admired and complimented about her clothes and beauty. "And admire her dress and tell her she's looking wonderful. That's important with Blanche. Her little weakness (Williams, )." From these scenes the reader can see that Blanche is very materialistic and self-absorbed always wanting to be the one in the spotlight with her new clothes and expensive accessories. On the other hand Stanley's interests seem to be more relaxed and laid back. His interests are more simple things such as bowling, drinking, and playing poker with his friends. "Branching out form this complete and satisfying center are all the auxiliary channels of his life, such as his heartiness with men, his appreciation of rough humor, his love of good drink and food and games, his car, his radio…(Williams, )." Stanley has no interest in money or showing off, he just likes to have a good time. From their differing interests, the reader can see just how different Blanche and Stanley are, Blanche loves to be pampered and admired, while Stanley just likes to be laid back and at ease with himself and his friends.

Buy cheap Blanche DuBois vs. Stanley Kowalski from A Streetcar Named Desire term paper

A third aspect that the Blanche and Stanley differ in is their social statuses. Blanche was raised in Laurel on a plantation called Belle Reve. Her family had a sufficient amount of money from the plantation, so Blanche has always been around money throughout her life. In Laurel she was an English teacher, but unfortunately needed a break due to stress and went to visit her sister, Stella. When she arrives at Stella's house she is horrified at what she sees. She is upset that her sister is living in a run down, cramped apartment, with no maids. "Why didn't you tell me, why didn't you write me, honey, why didn't you let me know (Williams, 0)?" She does not understand why her sister could make a transition from their status to a lower one. In contrast, Stanley has been living in the poor section of New Orleans in Elysian Fields. This building is "mostly white frame, weathered gray, with rickety outside stairs and galleries and quaintly ornamented gables (Williams, 1)." He makes a living by working in a plant and used to be a Master Sergeant in the Engineer's Corps. He is very content with his small house and property and does not wish for anything more. Once again, the differences between Blanche and Stanley are made evident by their social statuses, Blanche the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner currently working as an English teacher, while Stanley is an ex-Master Sergeant in the Engineer's Corps currently working at a plant.

In conclusion, it is easy to see how Tennessee William's portrayed Blanche DuBois and Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire as polar opposites. From the first moment the two characters enter on stage it becomes apparent to the reader that they are complete opposites by their appearance, their interests, and their social status. These differences follow the two characters throughout the rest of the play.

Multiculturalism

Our country was founded on the belief that all men are created equal. This was meant for everyone. When our country was founded, many different cultures existed in our land. We abused other cultures because we did not understand them. The United States today is much different. We are a "melting pot" of cultures. Although our country was founded predominately by Caucasian males, our country today is run by men and women of all sorts of different ethnic backgrounds. This is why our country can be run so effectively. We understand many different cultures simply because we live with them everyday. Some argue that we need to keep people from being able to come into our country because they are not Americans. However, Americans are not defined by common race or ethnicity, but defined as a set of people who believe they are free and want to have a say in their government. If someone from any culture can considered American, multiculturalism has not exceeded the purpose for which it was intended. In our constitution it states that all men are created equal, our nation was built by more than one culture, and the intentions of the idea of multiculturalism are to make the world totally

free of any type of bigotry or racism.

The constitution, stating that all men are created equal, explains the general idea of multiculturalism. Every person has the opportunity to do whatever he or she wants with their lives and their families. The individual has the same rights as any other person in our country. Every person's rights and beliefs are also protected by the United States and each person can express themselves or advertise their culture.

Women in Saudi Arab victim of discrimination

Saudi Arabia, which is located in the Middle East, is known as a religious state where religion and government are one in the same. As the Islamic Religion is the government, its book, the Quran (Koran) is the foundation and structure of the laws in Saudi Arabia. As dictated in the Koran, men hold all governmental positions while the women stay home and perform domestic duties. This seems similar to what the trends of the 150s in western culture, but this behavior occurs commonly in Saudi Arabia today. Saudi Arabia is controlled by male Muslim fundamentalist who reject western culture and concepts like equal opportunity. This is the reason why women in Saudi Arabia, Muslim or not, are highly discriminated against. Women in Saudi Arabia are denied the rights that were laid out by the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Muslim Religion, the government and the men of Saudi Arabia treat women as less than equals, despite nationality, social class or religion. It is customary for men to treat all women as the weaker sex, as this idea has been implanted in them from birth. They are taught this by their father's example, it in reinforced by the religion and praised by the government. All women despite birth country, religion, and social class are subject to this harsh treatment.

Alfred Lord Tennyson was one of the most representative poets of the Victorian era in England at the time. He began his writing during the period where the ideals of science challenged the ideas of Religion, which was furtherly spurred and challenged due to the Industrial Revolution occurring during that epoch. I have chosen to discuss the poem called "Ulysses" by the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson where I will be discussing the ways in which the poem "Ulysses" addresses preoccupations of the Victorian period. Through my analysis of the poem, I hope to acquire a well grounded and thorough understanding of the poem in-turn being able to understand how the Victorian period dominated and engrossed the mind of Alfred Lord Tennyson in such a way that he was inspired to write such original verse.

Due to the Victorian era having such a large influence on Tennyson's writings, it can be identified through reading the poem "Ulysses" that there are certain ideas and beliefs found at the time being portrayed or forced through to the reader of the poem. Victorians were largely preoccupied with how an individual can relate to society and ultimately how that individual functions in society as a whole. This ideal is played upon in the poem in such a way, that the character Ulysses is seen as exposing the feelings felt by the people in the Victorian societies of the time, during which the Industrial Revolution was directly exploiting labour and causing many labour riots and mass frustrations to occur.

The sense of frustration rising in the hearts of the revolution workers is revealed to us through Ulysses, as we identify that Ulysses is feeling a sense of lassitude which gives rise to the ideas of oppressive tiredness versus action. In the poem, Ulysses is faced with a split in the road, in the sense that he either has to come to terms with his oppressive tiredness due to his old age or fight against time and strive to remain young and full of life. "By this still hearth, among these barren crags, matched with an aged wife, I mete and dole Unequal laws into a savage race".

Ulysses' character seems to be based almost on the ideas of escapism, as during the Victorian period individuals were extremely sceptical with regard to escapist beliefs. His character strikes me as one that has no ounce of being able to give up in life and that the only belief he has, is one to keep on fighting for what he believes in till the end. "To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield". Ulysses' character can be representative in many respects as being a role model for people to look up to during times of hardship throughout the Victorian era and Industrial Revolution, whereby allowing them to develop a sense of striving and never yielding.

Tennyson places Ulysses in a situation where he is caught between two states of being, namely the tension between duty and pleasure. (Ibid, 146p.0). The ideals of duty, respectable living and doing the 'right' thing were imposed upon Victorians through their education and culture, whereby women were encouraged to be pure and men industrious and act according to rigid and powerful class boundaries.

Ulysses has the belief to strive and not to yield which is honourable in many respects, but he also wishes to break the monotony of life which is inevitable with old age.

Instead his honourable beliefs become selfish and centred, and it appears that Ulysses lacks any attachment to 'his aged wife'.

Tennyson uses adjectives such as 'aged' and 'savage' in the degradation of his loving wife and loyal subjects, illustrating Ulysses' developed sense of isolation and detachment towards characters that a sense of duty should be felt for. This indicates to me that Ulysses no longer desires a life of duty, but one of pleasure and fulfilment which he tries to accomplish by living his 'life to the lees'.

In contrasting between Tennyson and Ulysses, ideas of subjectivity versus objectivity arise, indicating that Tennyson expressed a need to face lift and grapple with his personal factors and problems through a self expressive voice. This 'voice' is objectively achieved through the choice of a classical subject, where the character of Ulysses is cleverly chosen to communicate Tennyson's intentions to the reader.

These intentions can be based to some extent on the loss of power, with regard to Ulysses' lost ability of power and that of the power taken away from Tennyson and society by the Industrial Revolutionleaving both with a sense of oppression being felt. "Though much is taken, much abides; and through me are not now that strength which in the old days moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are'.

Even though Tennyson communicates his beliefs through the character of Ulysses, Tennyson still manages to maintain aesthetic distance, as he separates himself by creating the aged persona of Ulysses. This effectively illustrates Tennyson's intentions and deepest feelings but still achieves to preserve two separate identities.

"Ulysses" is cast in the form of a dramatic monologue with a steady usage of irony and dramatic irony, where Ulysses is himself the most unifying element in the poem, but the qualities of an Ithacan king must form a consistent convincing character.

His character may be convincing in many regards and this can be seen when the king is looked upon as being heroic, in that he has a deep desire and love for his mariners. But the king becomes un-heroic due to the contempt for his wife and son, whereby he develops the need to shun all responsibility and leave on a voyage in search for more excitement, ultimately luring his trusting mariners into death.

This is exceedingly ironic as Ulysses tries everything in his power to escape old age and death by leaving on a voyage which is seen as his idea of escaping 'time' which in-turn indicates to the reader that Ulysses has a fear of death, as death is the untimely end of ones identity.

Therefore he hopes that perhaps there is an immortality that gives life some meaning and value, which is his wish for life. But that wish for life becomes an inevitable path to death which he so desperately wanted to avoid.

Gregory Hines 146-00 VS. The Epic Hero

"I don't remember not dancing, when I realized I was alive and these were parents, and I could walk and talk, I could dance."

Born in New York City on February 14 in 146, Hines came of age in a period of rapid change for black Americans, both in terms of political rights and artistic freedoms. His parents saw dance not simply as a diversion, but as a way for their children to see beyond the constraints of a segregated existence. Hines started tapping almost before he could walk, commencing lessons at the age of two along with his older brother, Maurice. As soon as Gregory turned five, the brothers went professional as the Hines Kids, making night club appearances around the country and virtually growing up backstage at the Apollo theatre, where they witness to the performances and advice of tap dance legends like Honi Coles, Sandman Sims, and the Nicholas Brothers and Teddy Hale.

The Hines family toured internationally and appeared frequently on

"The Tonight Show," and elsewhere over the course of a decade. But eventually Gregory grew restless with the nonstop years on the road. Gregory finally broke from the group in 17 to start the rock band Severance, a short-lived venture that nonetheless marked his declaration of independence, and the start of his illustrious career as a solo artist.

Tap dancing might seem an unlikely place for a 0th century black performer to find his passion. After all, tap, even now, is often disparaged as an antiquated remnant of a servile past, a minstrel-man shucking and jiving below the level of a true black artist. But while racism has often tried to co-opt tap, tap has always proved a powerful vehicle for a particularly African-American form of artistic expression. Along the way Hines fought against the constraints imposed upon black actors in Hollywood. He often said that he preferred taking parts written for white actors because they were, ironically, often the only ones that allowed him to express the complexity of his own black humanity.

Despite his many acting credits, it was as a dancer that Hines was truly a star. Fast or slow, smooth or snazzy, he moved with evocative perfection. It was a talent he was born with, a way of life he was encouraged to pursue by his mother, who saw performing as a ticket out of the ghetto for him and older.

Hines' appeal was written all over his face. He was handsome in unconventional ways, usually sporting his signature moustache, carefully groomed, and hair cropped to fashion. With eyes lugubrious but kind, and long features that rejected caricature because they embraced it too well, Hines' impeccable style was at once a form of self-expression and a tribute to the lineage of black performers before him.

Gregory Hines, whose elegant grace and easy charm earned him fame on and off stage and screen and whose flashing feet made him the greatest tap dancer of his generation, died of cancer. Though his final days were ones of private struggles, he will always be remembered for his public acts of beauty and creation.

Probably no other advancement since the industrial revolution has changed the way humanity works quite as much as electronics.

Nowadays, computers smaller than a briefcase and even pocket sized sit on desks and in people's hands allover the world, they are extremely powerful. They remember information, calculate vital business transactions, create forms, draw diagrams, and perform thousands of other jobs that were once done by hand, or not bothered with at all. This is all became possible because of electronics.

There are computer controlled and electrical appliances in homes everywhere, they all work to make things simpler and easier, but also much smaller, because of the development of silicon chips, and transistors, they are like switches but don't rely on much larger mechanical systems. For example simple appliance like an electric kettle, they sense the heat of the water and automatically turn themselves off when the water has boiled. This could be done mechanically but it would require more expensive and larger components, Alternatively you could do it manually by watching the water and turning off the kettle when it boils, but that takes effort, So the reason for electronics is to make you not have to put in that effort, so things are easier. This kettle analogy is a good example of the logic based around most electronic systems.

There are some issues about jobs, where these electronics replace the job of a person, or many people. In my example it would be having the person who watches the kettle boil losing their job. This can make more unemployment, but this can also be viewed as having those people freed up to do other jobs that electronics don't do, therefore electronics are making everything more productive.
