Overcoming a Life of Violence

MY FRIEND and I ran as fast as we could, and when we reached the river near my hometown, we dove into it. As we surfaced, we began swimming furiously toward the opposite shore.

Was this some type of boyhood play? Not at all! It was more a matter of life and death. When I looked behind, I saw police with their weapons aimed at us. I dove underwater to escape the bullets and continued swimming to the opposite shore. Even underwater, I could hear the gunfire.

Once we reached the opposite shore, we had made good our escape from jail, where we had been locked up for burglary and car theft.

Cheap Custom Essays on OVERCOMING A LIFE OF VIOLENCE

This was one of many times I had been wanted or actually pursued by the police for some criminal action. Although I was only 17 years old at the time, I had already built up a long arrest record with the authorities. Eventually, my friend and I were caught, and once again I was sentenced to a prison term, this time for a period of two and a half years.

Even in prison I showed a violent disposition. Because of fighting with other inmates so often, I was given a white uniform. This made other troublemakers and me stand out for special attention by the guards.

More Violent After Release

I was released from prison, but I hadn't changed for the better. In fact, I was more violent than ever. I quickly established myself as a ruler of various streets. Anyone who would challenge me quickly found a willing combatant.

Once a group of young men irritated me. I attacked them, hurting several before police stopped the brawl, even though my right hand had been broken in a fight the week before.

Another time two friends and I challenged a group of men from a neighboring town. Their leader stepped out to meet me with an iron bar. I disarmed him, but he slipped out of my grasp and ran. The only way to get him to keep on fighting was to give him back his iron bar, which I did. He returned, and I disarmed him again, this time making sure that he didn't get away until I had given him a beating.

One night, just to have "fun," I stood on a street corner in Harlem, New York City, and challenged anyone to fight. Various ones took me up on the offer, and the battles were numerous. As a result, my reputation as a dangerous, violent person grew. In these various battles, I was hit with bottles, tire tools, and clubs and set upon with knives and other weapons. But all of this did nothing to turn me from my violent ways.

Violence Escalates

I soon discovered that there was much money to be made in the drug trade. Being a drug user, I was familiar with the drug society. Before long I had people selling drugs for me, making me even more violent.

Once we raided another drug dealer, hoping to steal his drugs. Armed with a pistol and a knife, we broke into his home and held three men and a woman hostage while we ransacked the house, looking for drugs.

Another time a friend and I, armed with shotguns and wearing ski masks, decided to rob a rich man so we could get money for drugs. We staked out his home, but he never appeared, so we left. Without a doubt, had he shown up, we would have carried out our intentions.

Thus, at just 0 years of age, I found myself deeply involved in violence, drugs, and serious crime. My future, at best, would be one of life in prisonand I was very unhappy.

I often wondered who should decide what is right and what is wrong. I concluded that it was whoever had the greater power in society. I also reasoned that since humans were deciding right and wrong, and I had absolutely no respect for any human authority, I had as much right as anyone to decide such a question for myself. But I was soon to find a far better answer.

A Far Better Way

My sister, who had married one of my friends I had been in prison with, had consented to a study of the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses. She shared the things she was learning from the Bible with everyone in our familyexcept me. My family would tell me to avoid my sister. Why? They said that it was because all she talked about was that "crazy religion."

I was curious. What could she possibly say to upset people so much? I wanted to know, but my sister did not speak to me about it. Why not? She thought that I was too bad ever to listen to anything about the Bible.

But one evening I invited myself over to her home for dinner. I was sitting there eating with my sister and her husband, and I said "Tell me about this new religion." They didfor six hours! It made so much sense to me that I returned the very next evening to hear more.

After this second visit, I was convinced that I had found something to live for, a real purpose in life. Immediately, I began attending meetings at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses and also speaking to my friends about what I was learning.

My life-style remained unchanged for a while. But I continued studying and learning about what Jehovah God expected, and I made sure that I didn't miss meetings at the Kingdom Hall, where the Bible was discussed. In this way I got the spiritual strength to change my life, one thing at a time.

First, I quit selling drugs. This angered some of those I had previously associated with, but I still had my violent reputation, which kept me out of harm's way. Next, I quit using hard drugs and also gave up my immoral life-style. The last thing I brought under control was my tobacco habit. In eight months I had progressed to the point of being qualified for baptism, and I was baptized in 170.

At last I had come to the full realization of the answer to my question about who is to decide what is right and what is wrong. The answer is Jehovah, our Life-Giver, has that right, and he also has the right to expect his creatures to live accordingly.

I have often thought how the illustration at Isaiah 655 applied to me in a figurative way. That prophecy talks about the time to come when the lion's violent disposition would be changed to a peaceful one to the point that he would eat straw like the bull. I felt that in a similar way, I had changed from being a very violent person to one having a peaceful disposition and a peaceful outlook on life.

Still, I had a bad reputation to live down. As an example, I regularly called on people from door to door to discuss the Bible with them. At one door, the young man who answered recognized me and became terrified, thinking I was there to do him harm. I quickly explained my message of peace from the Bible, leaving him dumbfounded but very relieved.

Not long after my baptism, I married one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Sad to say, in 174 my wife decided that she no longer wanted to do God's will. She gave me an ultimatum give up my way of worship or she would leave me, taking our two small children. That was the most difficult time of my life. But I could not abandon my worship of God, and I continued to do his will.

A New Way of Life

Yet, Jehovah rewarded me for continuing to be faithful to him. In 177, I met a wonderful Witness, and we got married. She had a five-year-old son. Soon my wife and I entered the full-time ministry, devoting ourselves to teaching others about God and his purposes. When our son grew up, he entered the full-time ministry also. He now assists with various duties in the local congregation.

My wife and I have since had the privilege of traveling to many parts of the world, doing volunteer construction work. This involves helping to build new branch facilities in various countries to support the worldwide educational work of Jehovah's Witnesses.

When we are home, we stay busy locally, helping others to learn about the Bible and in helping build new Kingdom Halls. I also serve on a Regional Building Committee in the southern part of the United States. And my former jail matemy sister's husbandand I serve as elders in the same congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

I am grateful to Jehovah for helping me to take control of my life and for giving it an entirely new direction. As I allow him to show me what is right and what is wrong, my life just gets better and better.Contributed.

As President of the United States, I would like to propose a government sponsored, national system health care. With that, would like to model this system in the fashion of European and most other world countries, which would call for its financing through a twenty percent tax. With this proposal, everyone will be cared for in accordance to their needs, however the quality of health care will be equal in all cases. And with all the money saved from not having to spend it on insurance, can be put toward good use, thus benefiting the economy as a whole.

A UTE would respond o this by first looking at what the consequences are if he decides to vote in favor of my proposal, and if those consequences would benefit the majority of people. He would then most likely vote it down since it isn't beneficial to the greater number of people. The rich and the middle class would be hit hard with the maximum amount of taxes. And ordinary, the people of these socioeconomic classes would be able afford medical insurance on their own without this policy. So on the whole, the only people who this proposal would benefit would be the poor, who in this case are the minority. So if this policy's consequences don't increase the pleasure of the minority, it isn't in the best interest of the Utilitarian vote.

On the other hand, Rawls would see that the proposal for national health care greatly coincides with his feeling against the genetic and social lottery, which gives people unfair advantage. The poor would be able to receive as good health as the rich, thus leveling the field for all socioeconomic classes and no longer taking into account if the people are rich, poor or somewhat in between. With this policy everyone will experience equal opportunity, which would be well liked by Rawls, since everyone would be allowed to have access to health care, and the worst off will be taken care of in consideration to the Difference Principle.

Robert Nozik's entitlement, would say that the rich and the middle class who can afford their own health care are entitled to have better quality for what they pay. While the poor people who can't afford decent health care are only entitled to mediocre coverage. It isn't the fault of the rich and middle class that they are where they are economically, so they shouldn't be penalized. Thus, Nozick would vote down the proposal.

Write my Essay on Utilitarian, right-based person, John Rawls, and Robert Nozick for me

A rights-based person would say that as humans, we have unalienable rights. Among them exists the right to maintain good health. Therefore, people should not be denied equal health coverage due to their economic class. Whether they are poor, rich or in the middle people deserve the right to live a happy and health life. So if that calls for equal health coverage, twenty percent tax isn't a large loss.

The theory, which supports my proposal, comes form John Rawls who says that people regardless of their social status shouldn't be given any kind of advantage for their luck. This applies to proposal. As the president, I wrote this with the intention of narrowing the gap of economic classes, since luck should never be a factor played into whether someone would be ale to live a healthy life or not. Even though there is the rich, and middle class who can afford decent medical treatment, why should people who age endowed with certain unalienable rights be stripped of them, simply because they can't afford it? My answer is that the poor shouldn't be deprived of any rights and my proposal intends to change and give equal medical care to all.

The downside Compatibility issues may keep you from connecting to your VPN through some wireless networks. Also, help can be hard to get on the road. At those times, youll have to surf bare - if you dare.

SHARING YOUR NETWORK

Cheap Custom Essays on hello

1. Turn off passwords and encryption

Make it easy for others to get on. This will be scary for some people, but liberating once you realize potential eavesdroppers arent interested in you. They want to use the bandwidth, not read your email.

. Insist on security

If youd like to keep a password and/or encryption on the network, set the network names to the URL of your homepage, e.g., www.paulboutin.com. Put contact info there for Wi-Fi users, who can request the password from you.

. Position your base station appropriately

Remember, signal strength decreases as the distance between base station and laptop increases. Place your base as close as possible to a street, patio, or chairs where others will sit.

4. Register your hot spot

Many Wi-Fi users go online to 8011hotspots.com, WiFinder.com, and NetStumbler.com to find hot spots, but the databases are only sparsely populated Finding a hookup in, say, rural Maine could be tough. Submitting your network to these sites will make you a star.

TAKING IT ON THE ROAD

Finding networks is easy if you have the right tools and do your homework.

1. Sniff with software

Windows XP and Apples Mac OS X automatically build and update lists of available networks. But youll get a lot more information by downloading software from NetStumbler.com, or its Apple counterpart, MacStumbler.com. These free programs tell you not just the names of available networks but how strong their signals are and whether they have encryption turned on.

. Sniff with hardware

If youre wary of whipping out your precious laptop in strange places, carry iDetects WFS-1 Wi-Fi Sniffer, a credit card-sized pocket device with LEDs that light up in the presence of a network. Its also good for walking around the room to find the strongest signal point before you settle down to work.

. Dont take no for an answer

Staff in hotels, coffee shops, and offices are often unaware theres a base station hidden right behind them. Double-check for yourself by touring the room with NetStumbler software or Wi-Fi Sniffer. If you cant find a signal in a hotel you know is networked, change rooms to get closer to a base.

4. Dare to look stupid

Just like a cell phone, your wireless notebook is a radio with a built-in antenna. If you need to lock onto a weak signal, a little body movement can get you online while others are pounding their keyboards in frustration. Turn slowly in circles, raise your laptop up and down, hold it above your head like the Ten Commandments - hey, it beats taking a cab back to the hotel.

5. Stop and smell the coffee

Find a Starbucks, where you can get T-Mobile service - ,000 hot spots and counting. The cost a $6-per-hour charge to your credit card.

MAKING MONEY

If youre hoping to get rich off your home network, forget it. But if luring business travelers through your door is how you make a living, Wi-Fi can bring in extra customers and keep them there. They may even pay for the privilege.

1. Advertise

Most businesses hide their base station in the back room. Why not set it out front in plain sight, with a clearly visible sign? Internet access may be just what shoppers rushing past are looking for.

. Give it away

If youre a retailer looking to maximize foot traffic, take the simplest route Set up an open network with no password, so anyone who walks in can get online instantly without your staffs help. Once theyre logged on and settled down, theyre yours.

. Outsource

If youre bent on charging for Wi-Fi, hire somebody to run the operation. Boingo offers a plug-and-play solution for small businesses, while Surf and Sip may even come in and set up the system. These companies handle sign-ups, tech support, and billing, then send you a cut of the monthly take.

You are saying to yourself, a subject covered countless times, and in most cases you'd be right, but my stand is unlike the common. The question I pose to you in the confines of this one composition is not the ethical validity of the act of suicide, but rather if it is ethical or not to hate the one who committed the act, even if you loved and respected this person above anyone else? Is it fair to hold a small seed of hate for the one who left you in a lurch even if you know their reasons for doing so? On the one hand the person is out of pain, on the other your world is turned upside down and you're full of resentment. In the end I suppose it is up to each of us to determine for ourselves but here is my spin on it.

Ever since, I dare say the day I was born, my father was my hero. There seemed to be nothing he couldn't do, whether it was something as simple as putting together a wagon, or as serious as going down to my school and excusing every senior absence so I could graduate. I could always count on my dad, come hell or high water, rain or shine, there wasn't any problem we couldn't handle together. We were the two musketeers without need of a third, best friends, with a father-son show of respect when needed. Only trouble was, like so many heroes my dad developed what would become a fatal flaw. In 10 he got in a bad work related accident, and ruptured five discs in his back. The surgery he under went, which welded his spine together where the discs had been, left him in chronic back pain. He put up with that pain for twelve long years, it and the inability to stand, sit, or even work for any length of time without laying down, were what eventually drove my father to end his life.

To me, that man was unstoppable, almost as if he had the power to bend the world to his will. But within himself he only saw all the things we used to do, fishing, movies, the boardwalk, all of which he could still do if he didn't mind being laid up on the couch all the next day. He saw himself as not the Mike Gasque he used to be, but instead, as a failure in the eyes of my sister and myself as he told me on numerous occasions. Knowing all this, how he felt about himself, and how he just wanted out of his pain. In a way I must admit I am pleased he is in a better place, free of all that torments this mortal coil. I mean I miss him but the fact that he is finally in a place where happiness abounds, leaves me with great solace. Then there's still that kid in me who wants his way.

To a certain extent, maybe even a large one I agree with that little boy who wants his hero back. It almost as if, even though I know it would seem selfish to society, I want to say how dare you! Or Come back!!!! Neither, I know, would help. But that doesn't stop the wanting, or the hurt and abandonment I am left feeling. You see, in all my family, and this is kind of sad, but my father and a few close cousins were all I trusted, and with him gone I feel virtually alone to face the world. Not to mention the fact that he will never meet my future wife whom ever she may be, or his grandchildren. One day they will want to know about their grandfather and I have no idea how I'll explain why he's not there. I hate him for these things.

Write my Essay on Suicide: means to an end, or the end of all meaning for me

And in that reader, lays my dilemma, I love and respected that man more than anyone else I have ever known and yet, in the same breath, at times I hate his guts. As for my reaction to said dilemma, this whole paper is it, I am still going through it. As for a solution I offer this, Live in the moment and enjoy the happiness brought to you by each friend and family member because it maybe all there is left of them come tomorrow.

A frightening moment in my life

She loves me, she loves me not, she loves me does she love me? Maybe she just lust for me, I would say. Defloration can definitely determine ones love for another. Flowers are beautiful, but once the petals are plucked off, there only remains a stem, and my wife depicts this image.

My wife Marsha, always gave her version of what love should be like and most of the time, she sees love as being in control of her partner. Marsha wasn't always too smart; with no job and no responsibility, Marsha's only concern was who I am with and what time I got home from work.

Write my Essay on A Frightning Moment in My Life

My love for Marsha was much too complicated for simple minded people to comprehend. It could be compared to a paper cut, in which it pains with great intensity that seems to last for a life time. So my family and friends did not find it strange when I decided to make her my wife.

After coming home one night around 1 o'clock, she waited up for me. Upon opening the door, I was not greeted with my normal hug and kiss. But, instead, she stood in the hallway with her feet firmly planted on the ground. Her nonchalant behavior was not provoking to me at all. My only concern was why she had a knife in her hand.

She rushed towards me with the knife in her hand. At that point, nothing else mattered except for the excruciating pain I felt when the knife pierced my skin. With blood oozing out of me, I was temporarily paralyzed. Yet, I was still able to overpower her and pull myself away to avoid further injuries. To my surprise, my wife had a lot more attacks coming my way; I could not believe it. She proceeded to bite and kick me which was too much for me to handle. Her attacks lasted for several minutes, at which time, I shouted, "Marsha, why are you doing this to me?"

To her astonishment, she opens her eyes, covered her mouth and cried. She could not believe what had just taken place.

An unanswered problem buried deep in the hearts of most woman, a problem lay buried and unspoken for many years. Fulfillment as a woman had only one definition for American women after 14; "the housewife/mother". This same "fulfillment" was the greatest dissatisfaction and of course unfulfillment that woman suffered in the middle of the 0th century in the United States. A question of definition. Who they were and what their purpose in life was. Women all across America silently asked themselves, "Is this all?"

Experts coached woman on how to catch a man and keep him, how to breastfeed, how to control sibling rivalry and how to buy a dishwasher. Not how to have a career or higher education because that would be "unfeminine". Older women were giving up their dreams, dreams that less than a century ago the now old-fashioned feminists fought for. Younger women weren't even thinking about dreams. The thought of being the "ultimate" housewife and mother consumed their minds. But this feminine way of thinking and feeling left most American women unfulfilled. Leaving them with countless questions all asking "why?" Not really knowing

who they were as people. They became mechanical robots of society, dulling their minds with every dishpan washed and feeling emptier with every bed that they made. One mother of four who left college to get married and have a family at 1 states;

"I've tried everything women are supposed to do-hobbies, gardening, pickling, canning, being very social with my neighbors, joining committees, running PTA teas. I can do it all, and I like it, but it doesn't leave you anything to think about-any feeling of who you are. I never had any career ambitions. All I wanted was to get married and have four children. I love the kids and Bob and my home. There's no problem you can even put a name to. But I'm desperate. I begin to feel I have no personality. I'm a server of food and putter-on of pants and a bed maker, somebody who can be called on when you want something. But who am I?"

This is just one case out of millions. Millions of women who lived day to day numb to their true selves and personality free. This supposed definition of fulfillment for them, the housewife/mother, literally was sucking the life out of our once strong-willed women.

In the late 10's and 10's the creation of the

"spirited career girl" was wide spread throughout magazines and media. The flapper was thought of as the wild, free spirited icon of women. However this creation was solely made from the minds of women. After the men returned from the war, women started to drop out of the field of writing and editing, leaving them with very little voice in the media circuit. Consumed and relieved that their men had returned home to them, they stopped their career of writing and started up a new one, as a wife. The writers who now began to take over were men, men home from war. These men, who over seas, dreamt of their wives waiting for them surrounded by their cozy and peaceful domestic life. And this became the new image of women, to however possible fulfill there mans dream of that perfect home life.

The family became the ultimate symbol of security for Americans tired of depression and war. Americans commitment to family and their ideal home life was accompanied by a belief that the men should be the wage earners for their families and the women should tend to the home and children. Women started to feel the heavy pressure bearing down on them. Pressure to make homemaking a career. Agnes Meyer sums it up when she wrote in the Atlantic Monthly in 150, "What modern woman has recapture is the wisdom that just being a woman is her central task and greatest honor. Women must boldly announce that no job is more exacting, more necessary, or more rewarding than that of housewife and mother." Women seemed to be brainwashed of all the struggles they endured and advances they had made in the last century.

A "housewife formula" arose. Fueled by the minds of man and carried out by the passive woman. Fancy articles whose topics usually consisted of new developments in psychiatry, medicine and sex and marriage still existed, however they were now spelled out in terms the average housewife could relate to and use in her everyday life. These articles turned into a detailed Do's and Don'ts list. Ranging from "How To Keep Your Husband Happy" to "How To Solve Your Childs Bedwetting." What was happening to the minds of our once ambitious women? A survey taken of women college graduates in the late 60's only proved the tunnel vision women had developed. When asked how they defined success, the most frequent answers women gave were "to be the mother of several accomplished children, and to be the wife of a prominent man."(Gaitlin, 17)

The stress put on women to become this ideal wife only led to a much more serious issue. Ironically the husband's place of rest was the wife's place of labor. An issue that coined the nickname "the problem that has no name". So many American women suffered this nameless, aching dissatisfaction for many, many years. Betty Friedman, notable author of the Feminine Mystique, wasn't even conscious of the woman problem. "Locked as we all were then in that mystique, which kept us passive and apart, and kept us from seeing our real problems and possibilities, I like other women, thought there was something wrong with me because I didn't have an orgasm waxing the kitchen floor," she states in her book.

This horrible boredom with life let to many problems, physical and emotional. Women were constantly driving their children to Little League, Boy scouts, dance lessons, grocery shopping, doing the laundry, just as she starts dinner the phone rings, it is an endless list of chores. This terrible tiredness led many women to the doctor in the 150's. Known as "housewife fatigue", these women in reality slept too much, as much as 10 hours a day. The real underlying problem was boredom. You try to sleep as much as you can to make the day go by faster. Some women were even being prescribed tranquilizers. Suburban housewives were popping them like candy. One-mother states in the Feminine Mystique, "You wake up in the morning, and you feel as if there's no point in going on another day like this. So you take a tranquilizer because it makes you not care so much that it's pointless." A survey done in 171 of four thousand women found that housewives, who accounted for 5 percent of the population, comprised 6 percent if the habitual diet pill users. Housework had become a main cause of women's depression and substance abuse. But in spite of all this turmoil and anxiety mothering was the most satisfying job they did.

Another illness was rapidly beginning to be reported. Many housewives were suffering from blisters and sores on their hands and arms. Women to somehow relive their stress or somehow escape from things for even a minute would for hours wash dishes. This constant exposure made their skin on their hands and arms blistery and raw. A cream could cure the physical sores, but there was no prescription for the sores that these women were suffering emotional. AS more and more women spoke out and to each other, they came to realize that they weren't as alone as they had thought. Other women, housewives and mothers, were feeling the same unsettling feelings they were.

The trouble with women through all these years hasn't been on that can be treated with a doctors visit or a prescription. It is a problem of identity. Betty Friedan states in the Feminine Mystique, "The truth is…it was true in my generation and it is true of girls growing up today-an American woman no longer has a private image to tell her who she is, or can be, or wants to be. Public images in magazines and television commercials sell us rejuvenating cleansers, hair dye and age defying face creams. Companies spend millions and millions of dollars for television time and ad space in newspapers and magazines because of one reason alone, "American woman no longer know who they are". Women need an image to look upon to find their true identity. This was true throughout the 100's and it is true now. American women are so unsure of who they are and who they want to be that they look up to these images and decide every detail of their life. The "problem that has no name", was truly a problem of identity.

Looking for Alibrandi - Study Notes Part - (Part 1 - Part )

Cultural Issues

Josies family is part of the Italian community in Sydney. Her grandmother settled in Australia with Francesco, a man that was 15 years older than she was and with whom she had been forced into a marriage with. When they did reach Australia, the way that the Australian women behaved and their attitudes to men shocked Josies grandmother.

Josie understands that her Nonnas early years were fraught with difficulty and loneliness, as she was isolated from what she had known. Josie in her discovery comes to find a parallel between certain parts of her life and that of her grandmothers. Her insecurities are essentially those of her grandmother.

The traditions of the Italian community have refused to die in Josies family and she often questions some of the particular on-going ways. She says culture is nailed into you so deep you cant escape it. Josies journey of discovery essentially teaches her not to be ashamed of who she is, and to cherish the old ways of family. She comes to the realisations that her Nonna is too old to adopt new habits, and that she be appreciated for who she is. Josie realises that her Nonna went through a number of trying experiences that were not completely her own doing. In some sense she understands that fate and external factors have as much to do with the way that we live our lives as our own decisions do.

Josie, however in her journey of discovery fails to make a complete understanding of tolerance of others. When she overhears a girl at her school complain about wogs she breaks her nose. This act demonstrates that Josie does not understand that the Anglo girls have also inherited much tradition, good and bad, from their parents. Parents who knew an Australia that was predominantly white have influenced the Anglo girls at the school. Only since the 150s has Australian become the multicultural society that it is today. The girls who make racist statements are only learning this behaviour from their parents.

The journey of discovery teaches us that while we make our own decisions in life, we are also victims of fate. Nonna, Josie, her family and the girls at the school are all affected by external factors beyond their control. The influence of our parents, friends and our culture will shape who we are as much as what we choose to do.

Relationships

In her interaction with others, Josie meets a range of people with their varied standing in the social order of Sydney. Jacob Coote is local boy who lives in Redfern and goes to a Government high school. We are also introduced to John Barton, the school captain at a wealthy Catholic high school. He is also the son of a politician. In meeting these two individuals, Josie comes to discovery the class barriers that exist in society and the differences between these different groups. She comes to see the differences and the similarities between her life and that of the two boys.

John has great expectation placed upon him by his family and suicide seems to only way out for him. His death is an important part of Josies discovery process as she comes to realise that while she is poor, she is also free to pursue any sort of life that she wants. Johns life, however, was pre-ordained and he had to die in order to achieve his emancipation.

Josie comes to see a number of contrasts in Jacob. He is tough yet sensitive and loves him family. These contradictions are mirrored in the Italian community where a woman must wear black after her husband dies, however he is allowed to remarry. Josie would like to be in love with John and to have people look at her with envy, however it is Jacob that she is attracted to.

Her discovery helps her to realise who her true friends are. Josie does learn later in the novel that she is the most popular girl in the school after she is votes school captain. This comes as a shock as her social standing was something that she worried about.
