HISTORY

Project management has been practiced for thousands of years since the Egyptian era. Men undertook projects too large for a single craftsman, even with the help of his sons and apprentices. These projects called for the work of hundreds or even thousands of men, organized and directed towards a common goal.

It has been about a half of a century later that organizations start applying systematic project management tools and techniques to complex projects. Frederick Taylor (1856-115) applied scientific reasoning to work by showing that labor can be analyzed and improved by focusing on its elementary parts. He applied his thinking to tasks found in steel mills, such as shoveling sand and lifting and moving parts. Before then, the only way to improve productivity was to demand longer hours from workers.

After Taylor¡¦s death, his associate, Henry Gantt (1861-11) continued his studies in great detail. His studies of management focused on Navy ship construction during WWI. His Gantt chars complete with task bars and milestone markers outline the sequence and duration of all tasks in process. Milestones mark significant events in the life of a project, usually critical activities which must be achieved on time to avoid delay in the project.

A Gantt chart is a horizontal bar or line chart which will commonly include the following features

æ Activities identified on the left hand side;

æ Time scale is drawn on the top (or bottom) of the chart;

æ A horizontal open oblong or a line is drawn against each activity indicating estimated duration;

æ Dependencies between activities are shown;

æ At a review point the oblongs are shaded to represent the actual time spent (an alternative is to represent actual and estimated by separate lines);

æ A vertical cursor (such as a transparent ruler) placed at the review point makes it possible to establish activities, which are behind or ahead of schedule.

Gantt chart diagrams proved to be such a powerful analytical tool for managers that they remained virtually unchanged for nearly a hundred years. It wasn¡¦t until the early 10¡¦s that link lines were added to these task bars depicting more precise dependencies between tasks.

After WWII, the complexities of projects and a shrinking wartime labor supply demanded new organizational structures. During the 150¡¦s The Special Projects Office of the US Navy developed a technique for evaluating the performance of large development projects, which became know as PERT- project Evaluation and Review Technique. These techniques gave managers greater control over massively engineered and extremely complex projects. Other variations of the same approach are known as the critical path method (CPM) or critical path analysis (CPA). PERT charts depict task duration, and dependency information. Each chart starts with an initiation node from which the first task, or tasks, originates. PERT charts and Gantt charts are often used in project management.

WHERE CAN IT BE APPLIED?

Good project management is vital for large capital projects. These projects can span several years form conception to completion, can cost hundreds of millions of dollars and be constrained by the availability of skilled tradesmen. The most important goal of project management is to define a goal. It¡¦s very difficult to know when a job is complete if the final goal is not clear. Once a project goal has been set, the activities needed have to be defined. On very large projects these activities are broken down hierarchically in what is referred to as a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).

This written piece from the epic poem, Beowulf, begins when Grendel first leaves the marsh where he will begin his journey off to kill a room full of warriors but actually finds the classic hero, Beowulf, for the last time. It is written in the first person perspective.

I swim out of my marsh, saying goodbye to my mom very excited thinking about killing all of the Geats and Scyldings. Jeez, they have been driving me nuts with all of their singing and laughter. I wish I had friends. If I was not such an outcast and had one friend then I would probably not kill them all. No one will be a friend with me because I am a big, ugly, evil monster. That is the reason why I have been killing for twelve years straight. God, I am good because I have never been hurt or harmed EVER! I just cannot wait to kill all of their little bodies. Once they are quiet I can sleep peacefully. Even if for some reason that someone has enough guts to try and take me on, they will never be able to have enough strength to do any damage on me. Finally, I am here! I am inflamed with excitement because I cannot wait till I get to drink their hot gushing blood. I will be as quite as I can. I am touching the door as soft as I can with my fingertips. I walk into the noiseless mead hall to find all of these sleeping men. I laugh on the inside because they do not have a clue.I start making some noise. The fighters wake up and cannot move either because of fear or from to much mead. Just to be funny, I grab a cloth from a table and wrap it around my neck so it will improvise for a napkin. I do not wait any longer. I,

"Snatched at the first Geat

I (Grendel) came to, ripped him apart, cut

His body to bits with powerful jaws,

Drank the blood from his veins and bolted

Him down, hand and feet; death

And my (Grendel's) great teeth together,

Snapping life shut."

I seize the next man. He looks really brave and when I grab him I realize that he is really strong; stronger than any other man in this world. My "/mind was flooded with fear- but nothing/ could take my (Grendel's) talons and myself (Grendel) from that tight hard/ grip." I try to shake him off my arm but nothing is working against this powerful protector of peace. I am surprised that a man can fight me like this. The noise increases as the walls sway but do not fall down. I am starting to get scared because I am thinking that I might not live through this incident. I cannot think about anything except the excruciating pain in my shoulder. AAAHHH!!! He tore out my whole arm and shoulder.

I cannot think about anything except just to get out of here and forget about my arm. I still cannot get over the fact that I have been defeated. I mean nobody in twelve years has anybody been able to do any damage to me. I hope that my mom will get revenge and kill him for me. I really do not think that will happen because she is older and is a woman. I am not at all ready for the scorching depths of hell. Well here I am, at my lonely marsh that awaits my death. I am slowly dying now. Oh great, here comes my mom; I really do not want to explain to her what happened. At least she will try to kill him if I tell her. I better curse all of humankind's weapons to help out my mom in the battle. I bet that the warriors are now celebrating that I am dead now. They make me so angry! I try to get up but I cannot because my "/ bleeding sinews deep in my (Grendel's) shoulder/ snapped, muscle and bone split, and broke." Right before I die, I tell my mom that Beowulf did all of this to me.

Values

Martin Luther King, Jr. Equality 7-51

•Liberty/Freedom•Worked his whole life for the Civil Rights Movement.•Ran away from "society" to live on his own as an individual free person.

•Achievement•In 165, President Johnson passed the Voting Rights Act, something Dr. King had spent a lot of time achieving.•Discovered electricity and sang an "anthem" to his ego.

Do my essay on anthem CHEAP !

•Equality•Worked hard to achieve equality for all African Americans.•The whole "society" in which Equality 7-51 is based on equality. No one is better than the next and the word "I" is unknown.

•Knowledge•He is an educated person who knows about the history of his ancestry and what the Constitution means and for what it stands.•He educates himself on a hidden, underground tunnel he finds and with the books in the house, to which he runs, once exiled. He learns the value of the word "I."

•Sacrifice•Sacrificed many days in jail and loads of money to pay fines as punishment.•Sacrificed his ability to live in a collectivized society, where everything was provided, in order to live as an individual.

•CourageOrganized the bus boycott of 155 even though he knew there would be a punishment.•Has the courage to talk to Liberty 5-000 and break many laws that put him in prison.

Martin Luther's five most important core values, in my opinion liberty/freedom, equality, knowledge, religious faith, and justice. I believe that Martin Luther King, Jr. worked hard all his life to achieve liberty, freedom, and equality because he saw and heard what his ancestors went through their whole life. He was a devoted Christian who relied on God and the knowledge that he, one day, would be in Heaven, so that gives him a lot of courage to achieve justice and equality for all African Americans. He puts his life in danger many times to work on the common good of people. Martin Luther believes entirely in what the Constitution says, "all men are created equal," and believes that it is the duty of the government to fulfill this promise and bring justice to the African Americans living in the United States.

Globalisation

If you order your cheap term paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on globalisation. What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Specify your order details, state the exact number of pages required and our custom writing professionals will deliver the best quality globalisation paper right on time.

Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in globalisation, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your globalisation paper at affordable prices!

Why should globalisation be Stopped and what are the implications and the impacts/effects it has on our society and our economic growth in Australia as Americanisation dominates Australian culture?

As we progress into the future, the reality of globalisation comes nearer especially in the aspect of economics. It is said to benefit everyone including the wealthy but, is that necessarily true? If economic globalisation occurs then cultural, political and technological globalisation will follow. What religion would we all have to be in? What political system do we have to be under? What about those people who are uneducated or not very educated, with little knowledge of technology? If everything were to become globalised there would be no individualism, no identity and no nationalism. There would be no you! Globalisation must be stopped.

I am sure that you know that globalisation can be defined in many terms. Many see it as a primarily economic aspect, "as the growing of national economies to form a single economy". (Economics for the Real World , Cronk, T. Kirkwood, L. Searle, I. Swiericzuk. page 406) However, it can also be pointed out to be a rapid increase in cross-border social, cultural and technological exchange. Globalisation also has been defined by critics of globalisation, present it as a worldwide drive toward a globalised economic system dominated by supranational corporate trade and barking institutions that are not accountable to democratic processes or nation governments. Globalisation is an undeniably capitalist process. Basically globalisation is the rapid increase in cross-border economic, social, technological exchange under condition of capitalism.

This is typical of the most powerful countries to do so, what about countries like Australia?

Cheap Custom Essays on globalisation

What does globalisation mean to Australia? Australian corporations participate in the oppression of workers and peasants in poor countries in Asia. Australian mining and forestry companies are involved in extracting wealth from countries such as Papua New Guinea, Irian Jaya and Indonesia, sometimes relying on military support to suppress local opposition. The Australian support for trade liberalisation, particularly in agriculture, has been used to open up markets in poor countries where Australia's commodity exports put local subsistence farmers out of work. Australia has opened its own markets to goods made in countries that allow child labour, or forbid the formation of free trade unions. The Australian government has opposed efforts to include environmental and labour protection clauses in World Trade Organisation agreements. Australia should support reform of the WTO to make it more equitable for poor nations of the world. Australia places few restrictions on the operations of transnational organisations, which take wealth from the country, and are not managed in the interests of Australia. Australia has a strong vested interest in further trade liberalisation, particularly in agriculture. Australia has made common cause with developing countries such as Brazil and Argentina to press for agricultural liberalisation, as this would have the benefit of opening American and particularly European markets. Globalisation definitely won't benefit us.

There are global inequalities, critics would say that its getting worse and others would oppose, as they would say it "benefits all". The gap between the rich and the poor nations of the world is dramatically increasing. Over the past ten years, the number of people earning $1 a day or less has remained static at 1. billion while the number earning less than $ a day has increased from .55 billion to .8 billion people. The rising of inequality is the inevitably result of market forces. Given free reign, market forces give the rich the power to add further to their wealth. Hence, large corporations invest in poor countries only because they can make greater profits from low wage levels or because they can access to their natural resources. Does this "benefit all"?

Globalisation implies that national economies lose some of their independence and separate identities as they become merged into one global economy. Is this beneficial? This process of globalisation occur through a number of channels in addition to international trade. The channels include the globalisation of markets, the globalisation of production, capital mobility and technological transfers. This can be called a 'cat and mouse' effect on businesses, where large companies would be able to take over smaller companies, if globalisation takes place. The free market does nothing to address re-distribution of wealth. It assumes that wealth will 'trickle down' to the poor. WRONG! The former British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, once said, It is our job to glory in inequality and see that talents and abilities are given vent and expression for the benefit of us all. Unfortunately, this is not the only disadvantage that could happen if globalisation takes place. Environmentalist groups, such as Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace argue that globalisation harms the environment. In general they blame global corporations for global warming, the depletion of natural resources, the production of harmful chemicals and the destruction of organic agriculture. They have particular criticisms of global investment, which they argue takes advantage of the lack of regulation in poorer developing countries. Hence, global companies may locate polluting industries in poor countries, log tropical forests, or develop mines with inadequate controls. Globalisation is destructive.

Organisations like Greenpeace correctly oppose the global trade in toxic chemicals, nuclear materials and other products of which they do not approve, such as genetically modified foods, or endangered wildlife, including fish. They oppose the existing rules of the World Trade Organisation, which do not allow countries to ban imports of goods just because their production may have damaged the environment in the country of origin.

How does globalisation affect culture? Is it 'Americanisation'? A report by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), showed that the world trade in goods with cultural content almost tripled between 180 and 11 from 67 billion dollars to 00 billion dollars. At the core of the entertainment industry - film, music and television - there is a growing dominance of US products. World Trade Organisation rules do not allow countries to block imports on cultural grounds. It is argued that one of the consequences of globalisation will be the end of cultural diversity, and the triumph of a uni-polar culture serving the needs of transnational corporations. Hence the world drinks Coca-Cola, watches American movies and eats American junk food. American culture is seen to be dominated by monetary relationships and commercial values replacing traditional social relationships and family values. The people for globalisation say. "It does not make sense to talk of a world of 6 billion people becoming a monoculture and the spread of globalisation will undoubtedly bring changes to the countries it reaches."). As Australians, do we want to lose our own unique culture?

There are no possible alternatives to globalisation. Going global is going global! Globalisation must be stopped, and it means exactly what it says.

Please note that this sample paper on globalisation is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on globalisation, we are here to assist you. Why lollies shouldent be sold in canteens

In my opinion, lollies should not be sold in school canteens. Reasons such as a healthy diet, sugar content, effect and care of our teeth and financial savings will support my argument that lollies should not be sold in canteens.

Obesity is a growing health problem in Australia that affects many children and young adults. Health Education is a prime resource for children to learn about their body and how to maintain a healthy balance. Lollies, being sold at school canteens, are not a way of promoting this healthy balance. It gives the children the message that the school supports the selling of lollies as a healthy choice.

Children between the ages of 5 and 18 years, spend half their days in classrooms; where better a place to teach and demonstrate the ways and necessity of healthy eating and exercise. Health and biology classes teach us about our bodies, and the ways in which cells use food for energy. Physical education classes teach and develop our physical skills to burn and breakdown the food we eat. By teaching students these skills and promoting good health, we are encouraging a better way of eating and living for students. Why then would you go against all of this and promote bad eating habits in the school canteen? Yes, we do need a balanced diet but why incorporate more "junk" into an already compromised canteen menu.

Two of the main problems related to high sugar intake are dental cavities and hyperactivity within children. To help to avoid these we need to limit our sugar intake. Some foods naturally contain sugars, such as fruit or milk. However foods, such as lollies, have added sugars which will therefore increase the level of our sugar intake and increase the effect of these problems. Too often children demonstrate a high level of energy after eating too many lollies which can effect concentration in class. Children should be monitored by adults working in canteens, however that is another issue.

Parents should be aware of what children are eating, which includes knowing what the school canteen sells. They should know what the prices are and be assured that their children are taking a step toward the healthy choice and knowing how to spend wisely. In the past, many canteens were run by the school community to raise funds for the school itself. These days, canteens are run as a small business. They are out to make a profit and by selling lollies, canteens are can be sure that children will buy the lollies whatever the price! Although some children eat healthy foods at home, that at school they bring money to buy lollies and other "junk foods" so that they don't feel different from their friends. They may bring their lunch to school everyday and find that they are seen as abnormal because of their good habits. Other children may tease or "talk" them into going to the canteen and wasting money on "junk foods".

I am not saying that there children should not eat lollies but that canteens should be a role model as to the good types of food that should be eaten. Even if a food is healthy it can still be cool to eat it. This could be a job of the canteen to promote healthy foods as cool to keep parents happy and to change student's thoughts on healthy eating.

We can help change the fact that 'Australia is the second highest obesity population after America' by providing children with healthy choices and promoting these foods as 'cool'. Giving children other alternatives should be the responsibility of the school canteens. Selling lollies in school canteens is not a healthy choice!

Please note that this sample paper on why lollies shouldent be sold in canteens is for your review only. For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf

Ntozake Shange's most well-known play, For Colored Girls, was first performed in New York in a jazz loft and later in small bars. It opened at the Studio Riobea in July of 175. The following year it opened at not only the New Federal Theatre and the New York Shakespeares Company Anspacher Public Theatre, but also the Booth Theatre on Broadway.

Seven characters, each representing life in a different city, are presented on a bare stage.It is a choreopoem of twenty short poems connected by issues of race and gender, with dance and music integrated into.

It is a discussion on social problems in the African American culture. The play includes black women who have been physically and emotionally hurt-abused, raped, seduced, lied to, and looked down upon-yet they are surviving after. The choreopoem depicts black men and encourages women to develop self-worth and respect, and to enjoy sisterhood.
