Often people say that a person is responsible for his or her own actions and the result of those actions and decisions. In A Separate Peace, Finny a carefree, careless, dangerous attention seeker makes a decision that leads to his own demise.

After reading Gene's account of the events that led to Finny's death the reader may observe that there are three people who are all partially at fault for Finny's death, Gene, Brinker, and Phineas. However, after examining the story closer is it obvious that Phineas is the one mostly responsible for his death. Phineas creates a club "The Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session" whose membership requires that the members to jump from a tree into a river. Phineas being the cunning and shrewd person he is bullies Gene into jumping into the river. After many meetings, " the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session" becomes the center of Gene's life, which promotes Gene's destructiveness and enmity towards Phineas. Thus, when Phineas urges Gene to go to the meeting on the night of the accident, Gene is convinced that Phineas is out to destroy. In an attempt to persuade Gene, Phineas uses reverse psychology to make Gene feel guilty in order for him to follow Finny's plan. Therefore, if it were not for Finny, Gene wouldn't have come to the meeting on the night of the accident. At the meeting Finny also come up with the idea that they jump together rather then alone, risking the possibility that the movement of one of them could cause the other to loose his balance. So, if it were not for Phineas' idea to jump from the tree, Finny would never have fallen to begin with, Gene's trial would never have taken place, and he would not have found himself on that operating table. This makes Finny largely responsible for his first fall and his death.

Phineas' idea acts as a domino effect putting into play a series of events including Gene jouncing the branch and him breaking his leg the second time. which creates a series of events that lead to his death.

Finny begins to view the world through the eyes of a paranoid old man who is always seeing something covert in everything. On page 106, Finny even goes as far as to ask Gene, Do you really think that the United States of America is in a state of war with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan? This outlook is a mental facade that only succeeds in setting Finny up for a harder fall.

. Finny seems as though he will never grow up because he is so immature, with his silly denial of the wars existence, and his habit of always coming up with strange things to do just for fun

The one most to blame however was Finny himself, starting a club in which jumping off the tree into the river was a membership requirement was the first in the series of events that eventually lead to his death. If Finny had not done this none of the incidents which Gene and Brinker were at fault for would have ever had reason to take place. Consequently, the person most to blame for the death of Phineas was Phineas himself.

New signing Dean Holdsworth is likely to start up front but manager Stuart Murdoch may also blood some youngsters, including right-winger Michael Gordon, after five of his first-team squad left the club during the summer.

Ive left the door open for some of our youth team and they now have a good chance of trying to stake a claim in the first team, said Murdoch.

It will be a tough game - Crewe know the division well and will be full of confidence after their promotion last season.

Youngster James Robinson will make his Nationwide League debut for Crewe Alexandra.

The striker, who signed a new contract this summer, gets his chance because of an injury to the highly rated Dean Ashton.

Justin Cochrane, who earned a two-year contract with the club following an impressive pre-season, should be selected in midfield ahead of Neil Sorval.

And Crewe could also include 1-year-old striker Jonathan Walters, who has joined on a months loan from Bolton Wanderers.

Manager Dario Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke It is another exciting time ahead for the club and while I feel weve got a decent squad the players now have to prove it.

In the play, A Streetcar Named Desire written by Tennessee Williams, the two main characters Blanche DuBois and Stanley Kowalski are strongly portrayed as polar opposites when they are first introduced in the play. The two characters' differences are seen through their appearances, since Blanche is portrayed as a delicate moth while Stanley is portrayed as animalistic. They are different by interests, Blanche loves to be admired and pampered while Stanley likes to be more laid back and at ease. They also differ by their social status, Blanche was raised in a wealthy plantation family in Laurel, while Stanley has grown up in the poor areas of New Orleans. Williams seems to develop these differences more between Blanche and Stanley as the play continues.

When the reader is first introduced to Blanche DuBois and Stanley Kowalski, it is clear how the two characters are opposites just by their appearances. Blanche is portrayed as a pure and innocent delicate person. "She is daintily dressed in a white suit with a fluffy bodice, necklace and earrings of peal, white gloves and hat, looking as if she were arriving at a summer tea or cocktail party in the garden district (Williams, 15)." From this description the reader can assume that she comes from a rich background by her expensive taste in clothing and accessories. However, the color white that she has draped herself in makes her seem frail and timid. "Her delicate beauty must avoid a strong light. There is something about her uncertain manner, as well as her white clothes, that suggests a moth (Williams, 15)." However, Stanley is portrayed as an exact opposite of Blanche's appearance. When he first walks on stage in the play, he is "about twenty-eight or thirty years old, roughly dressed in blue denim work clothes (Williams, 1)." From this description the reader can interpret that Stanley is a working man, who seems to be laid back with his simple way of dressing. As the reader can see, from the very beginning of the play Williams has made it clear that the two characters are polar opposites, Blanche is the beautiful dainty moth, while Stanley is the rough and overbearing man.

Blanche and Stanley are also proven to be complete opposites by their different interests. From Blanche's rich and expensive appearance, the reader can guess that her interests can only due with money, clothing, and jewelry. "Look at these feathers and furs that she come here to preen herself in…a solid gold dress…fur pieces…(Williams, 6)." In every new scene Blanche is dressed or changing into a new and unique looking garment. It is also made clear by Blanche's sister that she loves to be admired and complimented about her clothes and beauty. "And admire her dress and tell her she's looking wonderful. That's important with Blanche. Her little weakness (Williams, )." From these scenes the reader can see that Blanche is very materialistic and self-absorbed always wanting to be the one in the spotlight with her new clothes and expensive accessories. On the other hand Stanley's interests seem to be more relaxed and laid back. His interests are more simple things such as bowling, drinking, and playing poker with his friends. "Branching out form this complete and satisfying center are all the auxiliary channels of his life, such as his heartiness with men, his appreciation of rough humor, his love of good drink and food and games, his car, his radio…(Williams, )." Stanley has no interest in money or showing off, he just likes to have a good time. From their differing interests, the reader can see just how different Blanche and Stanley are, Blanche loves to be pampered and admired, while Stanley just likes to be laid back and at ease with himself and his friends.

Buy cheap Blanche DuBois vs. Stanley Kowalski from A Streetcar Named Desire term paper

A third aspect that the Blanche and Stanley differ in is their social statuses. Blanche was raised in Laurel on a plantation called Belle Reve. Her family had a sufficient amount of money from the plantation, so Blanche has always been around money throughout her life. In Laurel she was an English teacher, but unfortunately needed a break due to stress and went to visit her sister, Stella. When she arrives at Stella's house she is horrified at what she sees. She is upset that her sister is living in a run down, cramped apartment, with no maids. "Why didn't you tell me, why didn't you write me, honey, why didn't you let me know (Williams, 0)?" She does not understand why her sister could make a transition from their status to a lower one. In contrast, Stanley has been living in the poor section of New Orleans in Elysian Fields. This building is "mostly white frame, weathered gray, with rickety outside stairs and galleries and quaintly ornamented gables (Williams, 1)." He makes a living by working in a plant and used to be a Master Sergeant in the Engineer's Corps. He is very content with his small house and property and does not wish for anything more. Once again, the differences between Blanche and Stanley are made evident by their social statuses, Blanche the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner currently working as an English teacher, while Stanley is an ex-Master Sergeant in the Engineer's Corps currently working at a plant.

In conclusion, it is easy to see how Tennessee William's portrayed Blanche DuBois and Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire as polar opposites. From the first moment the two characters enter on stage it becomes apparent to the reader that they are complete opposites by their appearance, their interests, and their social status. These differences follow the two characters throughout the rest of the play.

Multiculturalism

Our country was founded on the belief that all men are created equal. This was meant for everyone. When our country was founded, many different cultures existed in our land. We abused other cultures because we did not understand them. The United States today is much different. We are a "melting pot" of cultures. Although our country was founded predominately by Caucasian males, our country today is run by men and women of all sorts of different ethnic backgrounds. This is why our country can be run so effectively. We understand many different cultures simply because we live with them everyday. Some argue that we need to keep people from being able to come into our country because they are not Americans. However, Americans are not defined by common race or ethnicity, but defined as a set of people who believe they are free and want to have a say in their government. If someone from any culture can considered American, multiculturalism has not exceeded the purpose for which it was intended. In our constitution it states that all men are created equal, our nation was built by more than one culture, and the intentions of the idea of multiculturalism are to make the world totally

free of any type of bigotry or racism.

The constitution, stating that all men are created equal, explains the general idea of multiculturalism. Every person has the opportunity to do whatever he or she wants with their lives and their families. The individual has the same rights as any other person in our country. Every person's rights and beliefs are also protected by the United States and each person can express themselves or advertise their culture.

Women in Saudi Arab victim of discrimination

Saudi Arabia, which is located in the Middle East, is known as a religious state where religion and government are one in the same. As the Islamic Religion is the government, its book, the Quran (Koran) is the foundation and structure of the laws in Saudi Arabia. As dictated in the Koran, men hold all governmental positions while the women stay home and perform domestic duties. This seems similar to what the trends of the 150s in western culture, but this behavior occurs commonly in Saudi Arabia today. Saudi Arabia is controlled by male Muslim fundamentalist who reject western culture and concepts like equal opportunity. This is the reason why women in Saudi Arabia, Muslim or not, are highly discriminated against. Women in Saudi Arabia are denied the rights that were laid out by the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Muslim Religion, the government and the men of Saudi Arabia treat women as less than equals, despite nationality, social class or religion. It is customary for men to treat all women as the weaker sex, as this idea has been implanted in them from birth. They are taught this by their father's example, it in reinforced by the religion and praised by the government. All women despite birth country, religion, and social class are subject to this harsh treatment.

Alfred Lord Tennyson was one of the most representative poets of the Victorian era in England at the time. He began his writing during the period where the ideals of science challenged the ideas of Religion, which was furtherly spurred and challenged due to the Industrial Revolution occurring during that epoch. I have chosen to discuss the poem called "Ulysses" by the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson where I will be discussing the ways in which the poem "Ulysses" addresses preoccupations of the Victorian period. Through my analysis of the poem, I hope to acquire a well grounded and thorough understanding of the poem in-turn being able to understand how the Victorian period dominated and engrossed the mind of Alfred Lord Tennyson in such a way that he was inspired to write such original verse.

Due to the Victorian era having such a large influence on Tennyson's writings, it can be identified through reading the poem "Ulysses" that there are certain ideas and beliefs found at the time being portrayed or forced through to the reader of the poem. Victorians were largely preoccupied with how an individual can relate to society and ultimately how that individual functions in society as a whole. This ideal is played upon in the poem in such a way, that the character Ulysses is seen as exposing the feelings felt by the people in the Victorian societies of the time, during which the Industrial Revolution was directly exploiting labour and causing many labour riots and mass frustrations to occur.

The sense of frustration rising in the hearts of the revolution workers is revealed to us through Ulysses, as we identify that Ulysses is feeling a sense of lassitude which gives rise to the ideas of oppressive tiredness versus action. In the poem, Ulysses is faced with a split in the road, in the sense that he either has to come to terms with his oppressive tiredness due to his old age or fight against time and strive to remain young and full of life. "By this still hearth, among these barren crags, matched with an aged wife, I mete and dole Unequal laws into a savage race".

Ulysses' character seems to be based almost on the ideas of escapism, as during the Victorian period individuals were extremely sceptical with regard to escapist beliefs. His character strikes me as one that has no ounce of being able to give up in life and that the only belief he has, is one to keep on fighting for what he believes in till the end. "To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield". Ulysses' character can be representative in many respects as being a role model for people to look up to during times of hardship throughout the Victorian era and Industrial Revolution, whereby allowing them to develop a sense of striving and never yielding.

Tennyson places Ulysses in a situation where he is caught between two states of being, namely the tension between duty and pleasure. (Ibid, 146p.0). The ideals of duty, respectable living and doing the 'right' thing were imposed upon Victorians through their education and culture, whereby women were encouraged to be pure and men industrious and act according to rigid and powerful class boundaries.

Ulysses has the belief to strive and not to yield which is honourable in many respects, but he also wishes to break the monotony of life which is inevitable with old age.

Instead his honourable beliefs become selfish and centred, and it appears that Ulysses lacks any attachment to 'his aged wife'.

Tennyson uses adjectives such as 'aged' and 'savage' in the degradation of his loving wife and loyal subjects, illustrating Ulysses' developed sense of isolation and detachment towards characters that a sense of duty should be felt for. This indicates to me that Ulysses no longer desires a life of duty, but one of pleasure and fulfilment which he tries to accomplish by living his 'life to the lees'.

In contrasting between Tennyson and Ulysses, ideas of subjectivity versus objectivity arise, indicating that Tennyson expressed a need to face lift and grapple with his personal factors and problems through a self expressive voice. This 'voice' is objectively achieved through the choice of a classical subject, where the character of Ulysses is cleverly chosen to communicate Tennyson's intentions to the reader.

These intentions can be based to some extent on the loss of power, with regard to Ulysses' lost ability of power and that of the power taken away from Tennyson and society by the Industrial Revolutionleaving both with a sense of oppression being felt. "Though much is taken, much abides; and through me are not now that strength which in the old days moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are'.

Even though Tennyson communicates his beliefs through the character of Ulysses, Tennyson still manages to maintain aesthetic distance, as he separates himself by creating the aged persona of Ulysses. This effectively illustrates Tennyson's intentions and deepest feelings but still achieves to preserve two separate identities.

"Ulysses" is cast in the form of a dramatic monologue with a steady usage of irony and dramatic irony, where Ulysses is himself the most unifying element in the poem, but the qualities of an Ithacan king must form a consistent convincing character.

His character may be convincing in many regards and this can be seen when the king is looked upon as being heroic, in that he has a deep desire and love for his mariners. But the king becomes un-heroic due to the contempt for his wife and son, whereby he develops the need to shun all responsibility and leave on a voyage in search for more excitement, ultimately luring his trusting mariners into death.

This is exceedingly ironic as Ulysses tries everything in his power to escape old age and death by leaving on a voyage which is seen as his idea of escaping 'time' which in-turn indicates to the reader that Ulysses has a fear of death, as death is the untimely end of ones identity.

Therefore he hopes that perhaps there is an immortality that gives life some meaning and value, which is his wish for life. But that wish for life becomes an inevitable path to death which he so desperately wanted to avoid.

Gregory Hines 146-00 VS. The Epic Hero

"I don't remember not dancing, when I realized I was alive and these were parents, and I could walk and talk, I could dance."

Born in New York City on February 14 in 146, Hines came of age in a period of rapid change for black Americans, both in terms of political rights and artistic freedoms. His parents saw dance not simply as a diversion, but as a way for their children to see beyond the constraints of a segregated existence. Hines started tapping almost before he could walk, commencing lessons at the age of two along with his older brother, Maurice. As soon as Gregory turned five, the brothers went professional as the Hines Kids, making night club appearances around the country and virtually growing up backstage at the Apollo theatre, where they witness to the performances and advice of tap dance legends like Honi Coles, Sandman Sims, and the Nicholas Brothers and Teddy Hale.

The Hines family toured internationally and appeared frequently on

Do my essay on Gregory Hines CHEAP !

"The Tonight Show," and elsewhere over the course of a decade. But eventually Gregory grew restless with the nonstop years on the road. Gregory finally broke from the group in 17 to start the rock band Severance, a short-lived venture that nonetheless marked his declaration of independence, and the start of his illustrious career as a solo artist.

Tap dancing might seem an unlikely place for a 0th century black performer to find his passion. After all, tap, even now, is often disparaged as an antiquated remnant of a servile past, a minstrel-man shucking and jiving below the level of a true black artist. But while racism has often tried to co-opt tap, tap has always proved a powerful vehicle for a particularly African-American form of artistic expression. Along the way Hines fought against the constraints imposed upon black actors in Hollywood. He often said that he preferred taking parts written for white actors because they were, ironically, often the only ones that allowed him to express the complexity of his own black humanity.

Despite his many acting credits, it was as a dancer that Hines was truly a star. Fast or slow, smooth or snazzy, he moved with evocative perfection. It was a talent he was born with, a way of life he was encouraged to pursue by his mother, who saw performing as a ticket out of the ghetto for him and older.

Hines' appeal was written all over his face. He was handsome in unconventional ways, usually sporting his signature moustache, carefully groomed, and hair cropped to fashion. With eyes lugubrious but kind, and long features that rejected caricature because they embraced it too well, Hines' impeccable style was at once a form of self-expression and a tribute to the lineage of black performers before him.

Gregory Hines, whose elegant grace and easy charm earned him fame on and off stage and screen and whose flashing feet made him the greatest tap dancer of his generation, died of cancer. Though his final days were ones of private struggles, he will always be remembered for his public acts of beauty and creation.

Probably no other advancement since the industrial revolution has changed the way humanity works quite as much as electronics.

Nowadays, computers smaller than a briefcase and even pocket sized sit on desks and in people's hands allover the world, they are extremely powerful. They remember information, calculate vital business transactions, create forms, draw diagrams, and perform thousands of other jobs that were once done by hand, or not bothered with at all. This is all became possible because of electronics.

There are computer controlled and electrical appliances in homes everywhere, they all work to make things simpler and easier, but also much smaller, because of the development of silicon chips, and transistors, they are like switches but don't rely on much larger mechanical systems. For example simple appliance like an electric kettle, they sense the heat of the water and automatically turn themselves off when the water has boiled. This could be done mechanically but it would require more expensive and larger components, Alternatively you could do it manually by watching the water and turning off the kettle when it boils, but that takes effort, So the reason for electronics is to make you not have to put in that effort, so things are easier. This kettle analogy is a good example of the logic based around most electronic systems.

There are some issues about jobs, where these electronics replace the job of a person, or many people. In my example it would be having the person who watches the kettle boil losing their job. This can make more unemployment, but this can also be viewed as having those people freed up to do other jobs that electronics don't do, therefore electronics are making everything more productive.

Tennessee Williams' life is an obvious influence of this play, The Glass Menagerie. His sister's withdrawal and his regrets for how he handled her situation is seen in this story as he relives it. "For me it is a type of therapy" (16). In a sense you feel like this play is a piece of Tennessee Williams' biography because of obvious symbols such as "Blue Roses" (166) and "Shakespeare" (165) and also the diction chosen by the author. The fact Tom has many things in common with Williams such as working in a factory and drinks a lot is also good evidence this tale involves him. Because Tom is the narrator, Williams seems to want viewers of this play to know of his frustration and regret of his past behavior towards his already fragile sister, and he may feel a little responsible for her instability. What makes one become so content with such a simple life, frightened of the outside world and always searching for a get away? Laura's glass menagerie symbolizes her "fragile, unearthly," innocent and vulnerable nature (165).

When the narrator is describing Laura for the first time the audience can sense she is fragile "Laura is seated in the delicate ivory chair" and innocent "Her hair is tied back from her forehead with a ribbon" (167). Why is she so fragile? Maybe she is so fragile because her mother, Amanda, is in denial of her disability. "you just have a little defect" (16). Amanda is unconsciously ruthless in her interaction with Laura by bragging about how many "gentleman callers" she used to get at Laura's age "One afternoon your mother received seventeen gentlemen callers" (165). Big deal, you only need one special gentlemen caller in a lifetime to be happy. Amanda probably relives those days because when she finally chose a man to settle with he became a lemon. Reliving her glory days probably just makes Laura feel even worse about herself and allows her to easily crawl deeper and deeper into her shell.

There is rarely any confidence-boosting from Amanda, she usually only criticizes Laura. "to be painfully honest, your chest is flat. This is the prettiest you'll ever be" (165). These constant negative remarks cause Laura to be fragile emotionally and give her nothing to look forward to. This strange way of showing love on Amanda's part seems to make Laura feel stable at home because Laura can recognize it as love. The irony is home is also the source of her instability.

Laura's delicate nature is recognized throughout the play; however, Tennessee Williams uses Laura's glass menagerie as a major symbol of her "fragile, unearthly" presence (165). "She is like a piece of translucent glass touched by light" it sounds as if she is a piece of her own collection (165). This reflects the ambiguity of the glass menagerie's symbol. Perhaps sometimes she does escape so far from the world that she feels like a part of the collection. Listening to the "Victrola," gazing at beautiful glass in the light and thinking of an abandoning father could be pretty mesmerizing (1656). Actually, the unicorn does represent Laura, the only one with a horn on the top of its head, the one that is different from all the rest (1667). She is the poor unicorn that no longer exists in the world that must feel lonesome (1667).

Why is this collection so important to her? Maybe the glass menagerie is the only thing that gives her a sense of purpose. It seems if she didn't have her collection she would be ever a little more detached from the world. It may make her feel important because those little transparent animals rely on her to take care them and she seems to have no hope on ever taking care of a "gentlemen caller" (165). When a "gentleman caller" does finally come over to the house her mother dishes out all sort of lies to him about how great Laura is, which is silly because if they did marry it wouldn't take long before he would realize the truths. Maybe that is why Amanda's husband left her because she fibbed her way into marrying him and her nagging probably had something to with it too. "Standing over the hot stove has made her ill" besides being a lie that Laura was doing all the cooking, this statement from her mother doesn't make Laura seem very strong and is actually an indication that she is weak (1660).

The tension and arguing between Tom and the "ugly-babbling old witch" (164) of a mother is threatening Laura's stability at home. It is ruining her dream world perception of their family being perfect; hinting at Laura's innocence and ability to be naïve, since in her mind life can always be perfect. "[They are quarreling behind the portieres. In front of them stands Laura with clinched hands and panicky expression]" (1640). Inside Laura's mind a different type of arguing is going on, how to get these two to get along. Laura is the passive type and will sacrifice her self esteem among other things to gain harmony in her world "Make up with her, apologize, speak to her!" (1644).

These arguments between Tom and Amanda are hard for Laura, for she loves them both and her psyche would like more harmony in her world. Laura's fragileness seems to break up these arguments either physically "I slipped, but I'm all right" (1644) or symbolically "[It strikes against the shelf of Laura's glass collection and there is a tinkle of shattering glass.]" (164). The conclusions to these two particular arguments are symbolic that their loathing for each other's behavior hurts Laura. While they are arguing, Laura slips in the stairwell, oh no did Laura's leg break? Like glass. (1644). Tom ends an argument by accidentally breaking one of Laura's figurines; this is a symbol of a piece of Laura's heart breaking because two people she loves are bickering at each other. Laura's heart aches because these arguments put an end to any harmony in her world (164). As Tom bent down to pick up the pieces of broken glass, recognizing the glass menagerie as a symbol of Laura's "fragile, unearthly," vulnerable nature is easy. "[Laura clings weakly to the mantel with her face averted]" as Tom looks at her not knowing what to say (164). As Tom is picking up the broken glass he is realizing how much he has hurt his sister and how fragile she is, almost as fragile as the glass he is picking up.

Sometimes people go through life living a lie. People tend to forget where they come from and forget about those people who helped them get where they are. They become conceited, ambitious, proud and stuck-up.In Charles Dickens novel, Great Expectations a boy name Pip had these same issues. The point of this story is to teach us not to act this way because in the end some people do not fulfill their expectations and things begin to go downhill. Pip had great expectations for himself, but in the end they were not fulfilled.

As a young child Pip went through many trials and tribulations. Dickens starts the novel off with the young orphan boy, alone in the cemetery trying to imagine what his parents looked like. At the beginning he sets the tone of sadness, which makes readers feel empathy for Pip. Then, Pip is forced to steal from his own family, which makes him a more pathetic person. Meanwhile, at home Pip's life is not a pretty site at first. His sister, Mrs. Joe constantly criticizes him and makes him suffer for no reason. In Chapter 4, Mrs. Joe prepares Christmas dinner and serves Pip the worst food and the smallest portions, commenting on what a burden he is. Even though it seems like the odds are against Pip, he has one friend who always showed love and kindness towards him and that was Joe. Joe is a blacksmith who works very hard and wants Pip to work with him. But Pip has greater expectations in mind, which lead him in the wrong direction. He wants to learn how to be a gentleman and live the high society life, not a blacksmith.

Pip is sent to the Satis House to entertain Miss Havisham a wealthy lady. There he meets the love of his life Estella. Estella is trained to make men love her and then dump them. But Pip sees something else in this woman besides her vindictiveness. He believes if he is trained as a gentleman he would win the girl of his dreams and live a better life. Nevertheless, Dickens does not end the novel with a happily ever after ending. Pip starts letting his wealth change him and live a dissolute life. He also becomes ashamed of Joe and his past life. All of a sudden Pip thinks he is all of that.

On Pip's birthday he learns that Magwitch, the convict is his benefactor and finally realizes Estella is not meant for him. Now the light finally kicks in his mind and becomes ashamed for mistreating his friend Joe. Pip begins to show compassion towards Magwitch when he tries to help him escape. He also make mends with Joe and his wife Biddy, Pip's other friend. The novel ends with Estella and Pip meeting several years later. They agreed to always be friends no matter what.

Dickens ends the novel this way because he is trying to teach us not to be greedy and arrogant. We should have expectations for ourselves, but do not make them too great that we begin to change and become ambitious. We have to learn to be content with our lives and stay focused on making ourselves a better person on the inside rather on the outside.

In the poem "The Possibility" Fenton starts off on a negative note. "The lizard…engrossed…sudden silence from the wood" perhaps by saying this he states a sudden realization. A realization of a "possibility of good" that he has "lost." Fenton notes "I know this flower is beautiful And yesterday it seemed to be." He knew yesterday the flower was beautiful to him, but the "possibility" was lost. Now the flower, open "like a crimson hand" is not "beautiful" anymore.

"I know that work is beautiful" Fenton declares. He indicates that it is a "boon" and that it is "good" however100, it is not when his work "squanders" his "solitude." Fenton is aware that work is good to an extent. He also realizes that "work" invades his "solitude." He appreciates the solitude he has as Fenton recalls "And solitude was beautiful when I was sure that I was strong." He feels sure that his "solitude" was a "medium in which to grow." Perhaps this medium is a place he can get a chance to go against an entire life of all work and no solitude. This medium might be his one "possibility" to go against society. However, he is "wrong."

"The jays are swearing in the wood" with the possibility lost Fenton ends the poem negatively. He illustrates "the lizard moves with ugly speed" no longer engrossed. "The flower closes like a fist" squeezing the possibility inside much like this poem. The poem starts and ends negative keeping the positive inside. So now the "possibility recedes" and Fenton's chance against society is gone.

It was a sunny Sunday morning; the spring breeze was evident all around, the kind that says summer in on the way. My best friend called and offered to take me rock climbing. I was thrilled but timid. Waiting with anticipation I could hear the sound of his car coming, it was distinct in its own way because the muffler was on its last leg. He arrived in style, no not really. The paint of his car was peeling off and the smell of the exhaust filled the air with a horrible aroma. Every time I got in his car I felt embarrassed, but it was all right because he was the only one who could drive.

As we started up the highway we were following traffic along the twisting, turning road. Suddenly my best friend cursed under his breath. I looked at him surprisingly and asked, Whats wrong? He started to laugh, took his foot off the accelerator, hit the brakes, and said Didn't you see that state trooper? I nodded, Well we were going 85 up this road, he said. Luckily we were not the only cars on the road. About a mile from the turn off we slowed down to 55 miles an hour. When we pulled off the side of the road, we were both surprised to find that there were no other cars parked there. Normally this turn off was packed with cars, with people climbing not too far away. Although we were both happy that there was no one else around to interfere, there was a lingering feeling of dread. If something were to go wrong there wouldnt be anybody else around to help.

We both got out of the car and decided to go on against our better judgment. The trail up was steep; about two feet wide surrounded, with scrub brush. On the way up I was thinking both about how bad my legs were getting cut from the brush, and about not slipping on the sandy trail. The half-mile long hike was nothing but a warm up for my best friend and I, who are avid backpackers and trail hikers. We reached the top and headed to the intermediate climbs off to the left. My best friend is an experienced rock climber so this was nothing to him. However it didn't look too intermediate to me. Mount Everest came to mind! I walked over and stood underneath the rock formations. I felt so little like a two-story building surrounded by skyscrapers. The incredible height was nothing in comparison to the thought of falling onto the jagged rocks that surrounded the base of the formation.

Due to Mark's experience, I volunteered him to go up first, so I could watch and get a better feel for the grip locations. Mark reached the top with ease and as he pulled himself up over the edge he looked down and yelled Your turn. I approached the wall with anxiety; my right leg was shaking like it had its own mind. As I started to climb I thought to myself, wouldn't this be much safer if I had a rope of some kind. About ten feet off the ground I looked down, which was the first mistake I made. At that point I knew that there was no turning back and the only way I was going to get off this rock was to go up. With great determination I got about ¾ of the way up when I heard Mark yelling, You are taking the wrong path! I pressed myself against the wall so I could relax my arms; I could feel the rough surface of the rock against my face. The perspiration on my hands made the rock seem very slippery. Mark laid down on the granite slab and stuck his head over the side. With his guidance I started climbing again.

As I approached the top I found myself with no where else to go. I couldnt see the last grip; I asked Mark, Wheres the last hold? He pointed to a spot just above me and said, Youll have to jump for it. Jump! "I am not going to jump, are you crazy!" I screamed. Realizing that jumping was the only way to get off this cliff, I knew what I had to do. Mark put his hand at the point I had to jump to and said with great encouragement, "You can make it!" I nodded, then relaxed my arms and legs took in a deep breath and jumped out off the wall and up at the same time. I grabbed the grip but only felt loose rock in my hand instead. I shouted FALLING!" which is what he told me to say in case I ever fell. All the sudden I felt a single hand grab my wrist. I grabbed back and with locked wrists I was dangling high above the ground. I started searching for somewhere to place my foot. I could hear my best friend yelling, Find a damn hold. Luckily I found a crack and crammed my foot into it. I placed my free hand on the wall and pulled myself up with our wrists locked tight. Pulling me to my feet Mark placed his hands on my shoulders and in a low voice said You OK man? This was the first time he had seen anybody start to fall since he started climbing. I looked into his eyes and could see a sense of fear but at the same time relief. It must have been the adrenaline pumping; I probably looked the same. Yeah… I think so.

The time passed, and before we knew it, it was starting to get dark. On the way back down the hill we decided to follow another trail. We were looking for a shorter and easier way. About half way down the hill we both realized we were lost, it had seemed that we were going in the wrong direction. By this time it was almost pitch dark. Concentrating on ground beneath my feet, it became somewhat of a blur to me. I started crying with out warning. I guess it was a delayed shock that had finally hit me. With great emotion I knew that I had to compose myself before Mark saw me crying. I thought to myself, "Thank God Mark was in the right place at the right time." I could have either been seriously injured and even worse dead. As we kept walking we could hear cars in the faint background and see headlights. We headed toward the sound and used the lights for visual guidance. Finally we reached the highway only to realize we were about a ¼ of a mile from the car. We were lucky it wasnt a longer walk. On the way home, after a long silence mark said, "We shouldn't tell our parents, especially your mom, because you know how protective she is."

From that day on realization washed over me and I decided that it would be better if my feet remain on the ground. I also realized that friends are always there when you need them, especially best friends

Introduction-

- Four years out of our lives are placed in one persons hands. That person is so valuable to our country that he has to be elected in such a precise manor that there shall be no mistakes. The Electoral College is the statutory system in the United States for the election of the President and the Vice President. In 1787 at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Constitution of the United States was created. It was here that we had drafted the system for which we now elect our president.

Election process

-In an election, the President is elected not by the popular vote, but by the votes of the electorates.

_____________________________________________________

-The electorates are representative of each state. There are a number of electorates per state equal to the amount of persons in both the House of Representatives, and the Senate. The District of Columbia also has three votes to cast.

________________________________________________

-The Constitution, in Article , Section 1, says "Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress

____________________________________________________

-However, no senator, representative, or officer of the U.S. government may be an elector. The electors are directed by the Constitution to vote in their respective states, and Congress is authorized to count their votes.

______________________________________________________

-To win, a presidential candidate must have a majority in the electoral college. Before adoption of the Twelfth Amendment, in the event that no candidate had a majority, the House of Representatives was to choose the president from among the five candidates highest on the electoral list.- There are several pluses to its use. One of those plusses is the declaration of a clear winner. Whichever candidate wins the most votes, or the first to get 70 votes, wins.

______________________________________________________

-Also with the current winner-take all policy, it makes the smaller states votes more important and less significant to the candidates.

Laura Esquivel's choice for the title of her novel Like Water for Chocolate is a perfect fit for the contents of the work. Aside from alluding to the important cooking motif that pervades the book, the title emphasizes the unifying theme of the novel the more suffering one must endure and the more tests one must overcome for love, the more intense it will be when one can finally cherish and embrace it.

The supernatural link between Tita's cooking and her experiences with love is apparent throughout the novel. Esquivel intersperses her plot with recipes in order to emphasize the symbolic significance of cooking in the story. Magic realism is masterfully implemented to further accentuate the power of these symbolic recipes. For example, when Tita bleeds on the roses she uses as ingredients in a family dinner, her passion is infused into the food. Gertrudis, after tasting the food, is overcome by sudden lust, and feels "an intense heat pulsing through her limbs" (51). Soon afterwards, she sets the shower on fire with her intense passion, a passion that Tita was feeling for Pedro but was transferred into her sister. Clearly, cooking in Like Water for Chocolate is undeniably connected to Tita's frustrated experiences with love. It is just one form of the magic realism that Esquivel uses to paint for the reader a picture of what the characters feel and think but are unable to directly express by themselves.

According to her family's tradition, Tita is not allowed to marry anyone or be in love because she is bound to take care of her mother until she dies. This presents Tita with a monumental obstacle that haunts her love life severely. In fact, it is this dilemma that gives meaning to the title "Like Water for Chocolate". As the narrator mentions in the novel, when making pure chocolate the cook must bring water to the boiling point several times. Likewise, Tita must be frustrated to the point of madness many times before she can experience the apex of her passion. Her prolonged suffering in waiting for her true love Pedro makes the ultimate consummation of her love all the more intense. When Tita finally unites with Pedro, after waiting practically her entire life and enduring trial after trial, the encounter is so passionate that "the fiery bodies of Pedro and Tita began to throw off glowing sparks" (45) and the entire ranch explodes. This supernatural occurrence is a representation of the chocolate that forms when the water is frustrated to the boiling point enough times. This pure chocolate is saturated with so much power that it makes those who made it fully appreciate the pain they went through to achieve it, just as Tita experiences when she finally tastes her unchecked love.

Cooking in Like Water for Chocolate is used in conjunction with magic realism to convey the powerful feelings Tita represses. Laura Esquivel uses a cooking simile to demonstrate that true love must be able to endure prolonged, painful tests if it is to withstand time and, as Tita experiences in the conclusion of the book, transcend the barriers of logic and reality.

The aim of our project is to implement a quadrature phase shift keying baseband modulator and demodulator on ADSP 105. The project discuss the theory behind the qpsk techniques and implementation in electronic device. The project also discuss the software programming that controls the various aspects of the qpsk techniques. In the project we are showing how a keyboard character gets modulated in the transmitter side and how it gets demodulated in the receiver side.

For qpsk modulation the original pulse stream has to be partioned as even and odd bits according to their position. The even pulse stream shifts the phase of the cosine function by 0° or 180° consequently this produce bpsk waveform. Similarly the odd pulse stream shifts the phase of the sine function. The summation of these two orthogonal components yields the qpsk waveform.

The qpsk demodulation can be divided into three major sections. Since the incoming wave is suppressed in nature coherent detection is used. Secondly raw data is obtained by coherent multiplication and used to derive clock synchronization information. The new data is then passed through the channel filter which shape the pulse train. This shaped pulse train is then routed along with the derived clock to the data samples which outputs the demodulated data.

Qpsk has its application in almost all the fields of the digital communication. In case of mobile communication where the bandwidth efficency and less power transmission with less bit error probability is the main criterion, the qpsk finds its application.Qpsk also finds its application in under ocean communication, military and other commercial fields.

Physical Therapist

Physical therapists provide services that help restore function, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients . They restore, maintain, and promote fitness and health. Their patients include accident victims to individuals with disabling conditions such as low back pain, arthritis, heart disease, fractures, head injuries, and cerebral palsy. Therapists examine patients medical histories, then test and measure their strength, range of motion, balance and coordination, posture, muscle performance, and motor function. They also determine patients ability to be independent and enter back into the community or workplace after injury or illness.

When injured, Physical Therapists develop a personal plan to bring their patient back to a full recovery. Physical therapist assistants, under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist, may be involved in implementing treatment plans with patients. Physical therapist aides perform routine support tasks, as directed by the therapist. Treatment often includes exercise for patients who have been immobilized and lack flexibility, strength, or endurance. They encourage patients to use their own muscles to further increase flexibility and range of motion before finally advancing to other exercises improving strength, balance, coordination, and endurance. Their goal is to improve how an individual functions at work and home. Some physical therapists treat a wide range of ailments; others specialize in areas such as pediatrics, geriatrics, orthopedics, sports medicine, neurology, and cardiopulmonary physical therapy.

All States require physical therapists to pass a licensing exam before they can practice, after graduating from an accredited physical therapist educational program. The National Physical Therapy Examination must be passed to be able to practice Physical Therapy. Physical therapists much prepare themselves by entering courses provided by the APTC

Physical therapist programs start with basic science courses such as biology, chemistry, and physics, and then introduce specialized courses such as biomechanics, neuro-anatomy, human growth and development, manifestations of disease, examination techniques, and therapeutic procedures. Courses useful when applying to physical therapist educational programs include anatomy, biology, chemistry, social science, mathematics, and physics. Before granting admission, many professional education programs require experience as a volunteer in a physical therapy department of a hospital or clinic.

Physical therapists should have strong interpersonal skills to successfully educate patients about their physical therapy treatments. They should also be compassionate and possess a desire to help patients. Similar traits also are needed to interact with the patients family.

Physical therapists are expected to continue professional development by participating in continuing education courses and workshops. A number of States require continuing education to maintain licensure.

During my observation, I observed Ph.D; Patricia Hunt and her assistant Michelle Marks. During my 10 hours, over a three day period, I had seen 6 patients come in for therapy. Two of the patients were two that had been in a car accident. One had been partially paralyzed in the left arm, the other suffered from a fractured femur. The doctor had the patient with the paralyzed arm lift a small dumb bell from time to time, and she would occasionally switch her from the dumb bell, to a resistance band, the other patient with the fractured femur would sit in the "drum" (a swimming pool) and try to lift her leg up and down. The reason for the pool the doctors said to me, it would be the only way she would be able to move the leg without excruciating pain, and it offered a small amount of resistance. Two other patients were in there for the same thing, an ACL tear. They both were doing exercises to strengthen their knees. They would use the baps board from time to time, but they were constantly using the resistance bands. They would from time to time also be taken to the "drum" and were to jog at a moderate speed in place, one collapsed in the pool once from the pain, the other patient was coming to an end of his therapy, he helped him out. Another patient had muscular distrophyin his legs from being in a sling from an accident on the job. He had broken both of his legs, and he had been in a cast for the past months. When he arrived at the clinic, they allowed me to watch as they cut through the plaster casts. When they removed the casts, they asked the patient to get up and see if he could walk, but his legs were so stiff, and shrivled, he couldn't make it 5 steps from the table before asking to be sat down. They put him in the "drum" and he was to kick his feet back and forth for about 0 minutes, then move them in a circumduction motion for another 0, then he would be strapped in low ankle weights and was to do 40, and 0 degree leg lifts for incriments of seconds. The last patient was recovering from tendinitis she had in her deltoid in her shoulder she received from over exertions of throwing softballs. She would be asked to put her right arm to the side of her, and pull up on the resistance band, and hold it until her arm would give way. She was to repeat this for 15 minutes with incriments of icing in between. All in all, my experience with them was a good one. I understand the patience, time, and dedication needed to be a physical therapist, because it is a very demanding job, both physical, and mental.

LITTERATURE REVEVIEW

Cultivation theory claims that television cultivates a view of reality that is not consistent with actual reality but is perceived as reality. In other words people seem to believe that television represents real life. This is especially true in the case of heavy viewers of television. This is also true in novice (children) viewers and most research tends to lean toward the idea that heavy viewing of television by novices cultivates an idea that the world is a mean and violent place. Cultivation theorists attribute two mechanisms to explain how television cultivates ideas. Mainstreaming which is televisions ability to stabilize and homogenize views within a society, and resonance, which is the extent to which a person can identify an event on television with something in his/her own personal experience. Repetition of resonance and identifying with the idea of the mainstream culture would cultivate the idea. The idea of violence as a common event has been cultivated by television and reinforced by televisions portrayal of a "Mean World".

In a series of articles published in the Journal of communication George Gerbner and his associates claim that heavy television watching cultivates conceptions of reality in viewers which are consistent in the world presented in television dramas but not in reality. (Hughes 180) The "world" of television is perceived as a violent and mean one where both good and bad people commit violent acts. The televised stories that generate the most concern seem to be those that contain scenes of violence. "Acts of physical aggression are suspected of inciting impressionable viewers to commit similar acts."(Gerbner 178) One reason people are concerned about television violence is the frequency of aggressive acts. Violence "Plays an overwhelming role in television entertainment children see long before they can read. An American child today is born into a home in which television is on an average of over seven hours a day. By thee time children learn to read and distinguish news from other stories, they are fully integrated into a television view of the world." (Gerbner 6) "It has often been noted that by the time the average American graduates from high school, he or she will have seen more than 1,000 violent deaths on television. Given the sheer amount of children's potential exposure to televised violence, we worry that children will become jaded, desensitized, and inured to violence not only on television but in real life as well."(Gerbner 178)

The basis of the "Mean World" idea is from Gerbner and his associates twenty plus years of content analysis where their violence profile has shown consistently high numbers of violent acts. (Potter 10) "There appears to be a justifiable fear that viewing televised violence will make people, children in particular, somewhat more likely to commit acts of violence themselves." (Gerbner 178)

This is best reflected in Gerbner's study on adolescents and their ideas on when it is right or wrong to hit someone. According to cultivation theory children who are heavy watchers of television subscribe to the "Mean World" idea will be more likely to act out aggressively due to the acceptance of violent acts on television. Gerbner's research did in fact find that "young viewers who watch a lot of television are more likely to agree that it is "Almost always all right to hit someone "if you are mad at them for a good reason.""(Gerbner 178) Conversely children who did not watch heavily and had a better view of reality were less inclined to hit someone even if one is mad at them for a good reason. (Gerbner 177)

Also in Gerbner asked a question about a child's willingness to walk alone in his or her own neighborhood at night. Testing the theory that television's violent tendencies cultivate an idea of an over estimated prevalence of violence. He found that among heavy viewers "Females and young students are more afraid overall"(Gerbner 178) This coincides with the fact found by the content analysis of television programming where "In the television world young boys are the males most likely to be the victims rather than the perpetrators of violence." (Gerbner 177) Women are more likely to be victims on television than males and as the age of a woman rises so does the risk of being a victim in the world of television.

Gerbner and his associates' theories have also been adapted to support the idea of learning and socialization through television. Bandura maps a process by which people learn from observation, including television. Behaviors are learned from observation when they are repeated, simple, vicariously or directly reinforced, and the viewer feels competent in performing them. Most of the realities presented in television fulfill these criteria and can, therefore, be readily learned. Social cognitive theory clearly defines the cognitive and motivational processes required in the acquisition of behaviors from observation. (Tan, Nelson, Dong, and Tan 17) Since Cultivation theory and Social Cognitive theory have been proven to be true then one can assume that the more television a child watches and the more violence on television the more a child will be prone to violent behavior by learning from what he/she sees.
