A road is a pathway, constructed by physical materials or the mind, that leads a person to a particular destination. Whether concrete or metaphorical roads make it easier to find our way through the world. They point us in the direction we want to go and if followed correctly they will eventually bring us to our desired location. Roads are found in all shapes and sizes and are put together with a variety of materials. Like many other things nowadays, roads are taken for granted. Not many people stop and think what their lives would be like without these paths and if taken away, the world would become chaotic. Everyone would be forced to navigate themselves. This would be such a hard task many would give up before they have reached their destination. And everyone's destination is unique even though the road they are traveling may be used by a thousand other people.

A road, like people, come in all shapes and sizes. For example, my road at home is fairly wide and curves slightly up a hill. It is lined with evergreen trees (hence the name Evergreen Drive) for about a quarter of a mile. After that you'll find houses on both sides of the streets. Separating the houses from the road is a sidewalk and curbs. If you continue up the road for about four minutes you'll find the road curves and heads back down a hill. You'll find the same surroundings on that side too. But not all roads are shaped like this. If traveling in a city, like picture one, you will find that the streets very rarely curve. They are set up like a grid, intersecting often but keeping their straight pattern. Trees are hard to find in a city, the streets are usually lined with skyscrapers and people. People use sidewalks to walk, jog, sit,

etc,. on and these sidewalks are also separated from the streets by curbs. Roads can be long and

curvy, short and straight or even zig zag. The shape of the street is irrelevant. Where the road is taking you is all that matters.

Roads have a variety of materials they can be made of. Originally, roads were made of dirt. Then

roads were laid down with pebbles or cobblestones and eventually they were paved with cement or tar. Majority of roads in cities and suburban areas are paved. But, you can still find dirt roads in the mountains and less civilized parts of the world. You'll find more paved roads than dirt or cobblestone roads. Cobblestone roads are very rare and only usually found in old parts of cities. They were once popular especially when horse and carriages were used. Once the car was invented roads began to improve to accommodate this new invention. These materials used are important because without them roads would not exist.

When a road is used, it is used for many reasons. People use cars to get places and cars use roads to get there. Roads can be used to walk, bike, skate, or run on. In Walt Whitman's poem, "The Runner", he shows that roads are a part of a runners everyday life "On a flat road runs the well train'd runner/ He is long and sinewy, with muscular legs [...]." In cities the roads are occupied with taxi cabs bringing people to different locations in the city. In smaller cities workers use roads to get to work and buses use roads to bring children to school. Roads are used by humans, sometimes even animals, to get to a particular destination.

The first thing that comes to mind when people think of a road is transportation, traffic, cars, lights, sidewalks, etc,. These are all the tangible things associated with roads but a road can take on a completely different meaning. They can be used to symbolize a life or journey or maybe even a

decision. For instance, a road is used to symbolize life in Jewel's song, "Till We Run Out Of Road"

We're leaving

Leaving again

Can't recall

Where we've been

I guess we'll just go

Go till we're too old

Or run out of road

Here she is comparing life to a road. And when that road runs out your life is over. Many people also refer to a goal as a road. They have their destination or goal they want to reach and they travel down a road to get there. While traveling that road they may face detours or challenges but if they have determination they will reach the end and accomplish that goal.

Symbolically or physically a road is a journey. On that journey you're bound to come across a challenge. Whether that challenge is road rage or a bad decision, stay on that road and you will

eventually reach your destination. Also, do not ignore a roads components. Without these elements a road would not exist. Even though a road has many different uses, they are an important part of everyone's lives and should not be overlooked as an everyday accommodation.."[...]. Every stretch of road has meaning in itself and invites us to stop."1
