The pediments on the Parthenon were built between 48-4 BC and were the last part of the sculptures on the Parthenon to be completed. They formed low triangles that were nearly 100ft long. The pediments comprised of more than fifty different sculptures, which ranged in size from just over life-size to eleven feet high and no more than three feet from front to back because of the shallow space of the pediments.

They could be carved at leisure because they were lifted up in to place, and the roofing of the temple did not depend on them being in position in the first place. Phidias seems to have left Athens after he finished making the great statue of Athena in 48 BC. It was at the same time that serious work began on the pediments, so although Phidias may have designed the pediments, their implementation must have been mostly done without him.

The triangular shape of both pediments ensured careful organisation of the scene. The most important figures appear in the middle where they can appear bigger because the height is about eleven feet. Moving outwards from the centre the figures become smaller or are shown sitting, reclining or just with the upper part of their body showing. There is a problem though with the scale of the figures on the pediments as there is no consistency of scale. The Gods in the centre are gigantic while the figures in the corners are diminished. The pediments of the Parthenon were significantly wider than those at Aegina and Olympia, so that it was proportionately more complicated to represent figures on a consistent scale, despite this it is still surprising that even after the great advancements that had been made in pedimental designs from the end of the 6th century BC, the figures furthest from the centre in the Parthenon pediments are just shown as smaller than those that are in the centre, this is the same as the pediment of the Parthenon which was create in about 55 BC.

Buy cheap An appreciation of the pediments on the Parthenon. term paper

More than twice as much of the pediments have been lost as have actually survived. Therefore most of what we know about the pediments comes from what survives, what we think existed, writings from the historian and explorer Pausanias who travelled through Greece in the nd century AD and told us the subjects of both the east and west pediments and the drawings of Carrey in about 1674.

Although the West pediment was at the back of the temple, it was the first pediment which you would see as you approached the Parthenon. It depicted the struggle between Athena and Poseidon for the patronage of Attica. Athena and Poseidon arrived simultaneously on the Acropolis ready to claim patronage of the city. In the centre of the pediment they are shown striding away from each other, but turning to look back (as in the bull metope at Olympia). During the contest, Poseidon offered a salt-spring and Athena offered an olive-tree. The figures are carved in the round, so that they are like freestanding statues attached to the floor of the pediment. Athena and Poseidon each have a weapon. Athena has a spear while Poseidon has a trident. Athena has just made an olive-tree miracously appear on the Acropolis, which allowed her to win the patronage of Attica. The olive tree probably filled the centre of the pediment. At the appearance of it Athena and Poseidon seem to draw back in excitement. Their heads are turned towards the centre. Excitement ripples outward through the assembled audience of gods and heroes. The entire pediment is filled with lively figures. To the right and left of them are their rearing horses, which are reigned by Nike and Amphitrite. On either side of the horses are attendant messenger deities Hermes is on the side of Athena and Iris is on the side of Poseidon, they conducted the central groups to the contest. Many figures look like they are disturbed by shock-waves which radiate from the centre of the pediment. For example Iris who is winged and rushes forward once the contest has taken place. Patterns of light and shade are shown over the surface of her figure. Gods and heroes are lined up on either side as far as the corners. Those flanking the chariot-groups may have represented the renowned founding figures of Athens. But, because of the damage, especially to the centre of the pediment, the names and the position of the figures on the pediment are only partially known from Pausanias and Jacques Carrey who drew a picture of the pediment in about 1674 when little more than the horses of Poseidon were missing. Some of the other figures on the west pediment may be King Cecrops and a snake or a snaky tail, a river god, either Cephisus or Ilissus and possibly Oreithyia, daughter of Erectheus, a legendary King of Athens holding two children.

The most complete surviving figure from the west pediment is the river god (Cephisus or Ilisuss) in the left-hand corner. He is little affected by the activity in the centre. He is shown on the point of turning round to see what is going on, raising himself up on his left arm and turning his head to get a better view of the contest. We can see the tension and relaxation of his muscles and skin under his wet and clinging drapery. In position and function, he is similar to the river god in the east pediment at Olympia, but in style he is different. The river god at Olympia is caused to be in terms of grand simplification while the one on the Parthenon is charactised by a wealth of subtle anatomical detail and modifications of great fragility. The back view of the Parthenon river god reveals the drapery, which seems to almost lap at the body as if the current were sweeping by.

The east pediment depicts the birth of Athena. It shows the moment after the event. The earliest extant version of the legend of Athene's birth is given by the poet Hesiod (about 700 BC). Athena is said to have had a miraculous birth springing fully-armed from the head of her father Zeus (which was split open by the axe of Hephaistos). Zeus had previously swallowed Metis, Athena's mother, because of the fear that she would give birth to a son stronger than himself. The central group of the pediment were destroyed many centuries ago probably when the Parthenon was converted into a Christian church and an apse was built at its east end. A seated Zeus and Athena probably occupied the centre of the pediment in her full glory standing next to him. As in the west pediment, these figures probably created an explosive centre with the astonishing news of her birth which decreased in intensity as it reached the corners.

The whole scene was framed by the rising of the sun, with the sun-god Helios, on the left, In his chariot; and on the right, by the setting of the moon with the moon-goddess Selene.

"I felt a Funeral in my brain"

Almost unknown as a poet in her lifetime, Emily Dickinson is now recognized as one of the greatest poets who used many different devices to develop her poetry, which made her style quiet unique. A glance at one of her poems may lead one to believe that she was quiet and a simple poet. The poetry of Dickinson attempt to romanticize nature and speak of death and loneliness that is not only in her poems, but also in her life. "I felt a funeral in my brain". The use of words associated with death gives the poem an ominous and dark karma. At the beginning of this poem the feelings of grief and pain are evident. Throughout the rest of the poem, there is a strong sense that the speaker needs to make a choice between a world full of trouble and pain or a heaven that brings solitude and peace.

In the first stanza, Dickinson uses the metaphor of a funeral to represent the speaker's sense that a part of her is dying, that is, her reason is being overwhelmed by the irrationality of the unconscious. "I felt the funeral in my brain" (li 1) a funeral is an appropriate image for this ordeal. The funeral marks the passage from one state to another (Life to death, sanity to insanity). Also a funeral is a formal event, whose rules and procedures suggest control and order. The control and order implicit in a funeral contrast ironically with the lack of control and loss of rationality that threaten the speaker. However, the poet is not observing the funeral but is feeling it. She is both observer of the funeral and participant, indicating that the Self is divided.

The mourners are a metaphor to express her pain, "And mourners, to and fro," (li ). Their treading indicates a pressure that is pushing her down. "Kept beating, beating, till I thought/ my mind was going numb" (lis 7-8). The speaker has a momentary impression that reason "sense" is escaping or being lost. The pressure of the treading is reasserted with the repetition "beating, beating." This time her mind, the source of reasoning, goes "numb", a further deterioration in her condition.

One can trace the process of the speaker's loss rationality in stanza three and four. The last two lines of stanza four assess her condition, "And I and silence some strange race/ Wrecked, solitary, here."(lis 15-16), she sees herself as wrecked and solitary. Her descent into irrationality separates her from other human beings, making her a member of "some strange race". Her alienation and inability to communicate are indicated by her being enveloped by silence. This is also shows Dickinson in an in-between state of sanity and insanity. She finds herself in a strange place with a "strange race" not knowing where to go or not to do.

In conclusion, as in all poems, the true meaning is always deeper than the meaning of the words. Each of the poems of Dickinson concerns themselves with realms of consciousness with the isolated nature of existence. For this reason, they are intensely personal as they focus on the inner experience. These passing moment of intense insight are well depicted in many of her poems. And "I felt a funeral in my brain" is one of them.

World Issues can be defined as any issues that affects globally, world issues are almost always inter-connected with all aspects of life.

One of the most controversial issues included the topic of abortion; this issue is inter-connected with nearly all aspects of life, including different array of perspective interpretations of life, political, human rights, religious, and moral. For example since abortion was legalized in Canada, nearly every week there is something in the local newspaper that debates about abortion, whether it be the fetal rights or the rights of women.

Order custom research paper on Victims of "Perception"

Many see this topic as a just a local political issue since abortion, since it falls into the provincial health jurisdiction. However, other sees what we outlaw in our province will watched by various religious groups, and human rights activist worldwide, because of its complexity and different interpretations of life.

Abortion is considered extremely political sensitive, since it involves the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and which clearly states that every citizen are entitled to equal fundamental rights and freedoms. In other words our civil liberties had given all women the rights to abortion.

At same time many politicians have passionately debated that abortion should be banned under Section 7 of our Charter, since it clearly stated that "that no individual shall be deprived of life, liberty or security of person". Their perception of a fetus is that of a life, and aborting the fetus is exactly same as deprived of life, rights to a life and liberty.

In the other hand the abortion ban would create lots of controversies, since the pro-choice activist debated that if abortion was banned, the women would have lost control of their body since they are force into giving an unwanted birth. As result the pro-choice view the banning of abortion would result in loss of liberty for the women, which Canadian Chart of Rights and Freedom have entitled them.

Therefore, it is inevitable that such political action would undoubtedly be complicated by an array of perspective interpretations.

Secondly, equally as complicated is the question of morality. Those who are against abortion had the ray of perception that it is absolutely immoral for anyone to deprive a defenseless innocent life, just because someone doesn't want it. If that is the case, should we then allow parents to deprived their mentally ill children or allowing putting anyone down who is a disadvantage to the society?

However, the pro-choice's perception is its not immoral, because it would be a disadvantage to the child if they are born to any women that are not financially stable to raise them, and have no other means to able to support that child. Further more, if the abortion is ban, then those women who are addicted to drugs or diagnosed with AIDS would all be force to give birth. As result it would create even more strain on our health care system, when there are babies born with HIV, or mental illness.

Again this situation created an array of personal opinions and controversies. In one hand we have large numbers of people who sees all life is valuable, and in another hand there are people who believe that giving birth to a child born with mental illness or AIDS, is disadvantage to the child and it would be in the best interest of the child to be aborted.

Lastly, religion is another big part of this debate, all religion teach the kill of an innocent life is considered against god's will. However this will also lead to various different arrays of perspective on the definition of life and where does life begins.

The Roman Catholic's policies on abortion are mainly based on the teaching of the Bible (Basic Instruction before Leaving Earth), which stated "Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from Him." - Psalm 17 and God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them - Genesis 17. Therefore the Catholics believed that the birth is a process of reproducing life from the god's image, and it is a sin to take away the image of God in human beings.

However, the Roman Catholic's perception of life is very controversial; because there are debates even within the Catholic Religion, on where does the life begin. Doesn't it begin at birth or inside the mother's womb, or does life mean consciousness. If the life begins inside the mother's womb, then is it is against the religious teaching to prevent an unwanted birth with birth control pills? In other hand, if life means consciousness, clearly a fetus would not have consciousness, and then what is the different of killing a fetus different from a chicken or pig?

So, as you can clearly see this issue really depends on one's array of perspective on the definition of life and where it begins.

In the end, we can clearly see no world issues can escape the realm of political, economical, or the moral arenas regardless whether its in local or national level.

We have analyzed both side of the augments and both side provided some very strong perceptions of whether it is moral, or illegal, or against the religious teaching to abort a fetus.

For example, in the moral category, we see large percentage of people who values all human life, and it is immoral to take an away any life from an innocent being. In the other hand there is equally large percentage of people who thinks that it is in the best interest of the child to be aborted, if they are going to be born with disadvantaged condition such as mental illness, AIDS, or have a mother who is addicted to drugs.

The situation is similar in the political arena, where one side who consider abortion is illegal, because under Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom, which stated that "no individual shall be deprived of life, liberty or security, and they see fetus as no different then us. In the other hand, pro-abortion politicians agued that if abortion were outlaw, the women will be force into giving a unwanted birth, as result they would loss their liberty as promised in the Charter.

Debates even exist in religions, because not everyone had agreed to the same definition of life and where does it begins.

In the end, we all can agree this issue had created victims of perception for both sides. One side perceived fetus as the victims of abortion, due to loss of future. The other side perceived women as the victims for lost of liberty.

My conclusion is this topic will always be a controversial issue in a democratic society and there will always be disputing sides to the matter. Each person must make their own decisions based on their beliefs and factual evidence. Both sides must learn to be open-minded to the other side and learn to respect the fact that they have different thoughts and views.

Ernest Hemingway has managed to create a unique character using close to no action and dialogue all described in just fifty pages. The audience is able to recognize Santiagos understanding and relationship with the world, his attitude towards life as well as some of his more concrete problems. It appears that in the novel The Old Man and the Sea the author needed to show a certain personality type encapsulated in one character on his fishing trip. It is visible that with all the pleasant characteristics the fisherman has, he is still holding on to his life tightly though immense amounts of problems. In addition to that, a rather vivid physical description was given to Santiago.

The old man in the book was not outstanding in his appearance. Like many more Cuban fishermen, as I would imagine, he was thin and wrinkly. The text states this fact clearly in the phrase , The old man was thin and gaunt with deep wrinkles on his back and neck. Santiago was also covered with blotches of benevolent skin cancer likely because of the burning sun in the area. The Cuban fishermans eyes were the same colour as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated. The old mans appearance hints about some of the personal qualities he might have, for example a good attitude to life.

Throughout the book though the frequently shown trait of the old man was his great faith and determination. He had not once shown despair appropriate for the situation. When the sharks were attacking, he had not helplessly given the fish away, but fought the attackers with his bare hands. At the beginning of the novel, the man said, Have faith in the Jankees my son. Think of the great diMaggio. Santiago had great respect for everyone and everything he interacted with regardless of whether they were his friends or his prey. He mentions that everyone should treat the sea not as an enemy but as something that withheld or gave great favours, he also treated the boy and the fish with respect. The fisherman was presented independent. He did not ask any younger fishermen to come with him, and neither did he go fishing with others at all. What Santiago believes is, I try not to borrow. First you borrow then you beg . This individual is faithful, independent, and respectful, but he is old and lonely.

His only companion, a boy named Manolin, is forbidden by his parents to fish with the old man. Santiago has no close friends. His older fellow fishermen feel sorry for his bad luck with fishing, and the younger ones just make fun of him. He is poor as most other fishermen, but wishes to bring a big fish in to feed everyone. There is not much social interaction at all in his life. All of his actions are centered around the sole purpose of keeping himself alive to catch more fish.

Do my essay on old man and the sea - character sketch CHEAP !

The old man from the novel represents the combination of lonelyness and strength of character that the author possibly intended to describe. It was exceptionally summarized and emphasized in Santiago life as it was displayed. Regardless of the fact that he has so many good qualities and such traits as faith and determination, this does not guarantee him a happy old age. In a short novel like The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway illustrated this point and proved it.
