Ralph

Ralph means counsel.

Ralph is the leader of the boys he acts almost like a grown-up because he is a willing leader but knows that each boy must speak his mind, and when a decision is to be made he lets the boys vote on it. He is described as, a fair-haired boy of twelve, and strong like a boxer (10). You meet Ralph first when he is on the beach looking for the others (7).

Jack

Cheap University Papers on Lord of the Flies

Jack means one who supplants.

Jack is the leader of the choirboys. He is extremely jealous of Ralph because Ralph is the leader of all of the boys. Jack is described as tall and thin with red hair and freckles (0). When we meet Jack he is marching the choirboys down the beach. Jack loves to have power and be in charge of everybody. Ralph lets Jack be the leader of the hunters because Ralph saw that Jack was furious when the boys voted Ralph instead of Jack as the leader ().

Piggy

The name connects Piggy to the pigs that the other boys hunt and kill. Piggy is much wiser than the other boys. He tries to think of what the adults would do if they were in the same situation the boys were in. Piggy tries very hard to keep peace on the island. It is really hard for Piggy to keep up with everybody because he has asthma (). Piggy is described as shorter than Ralph and very fat (7). We meet Piggy at the very beginning of the story when he was in the jungle talking to Ralph. Ralph is Piggy's only friend, none of the other boys really like Piggy and I believe it's because Piggy is so much smarter then they are.

Simon

Simon means listener.

Simon is a loner he doesn't have any friends on the island because when Simon talks he doesn't really make any sense to any of the boys. Simon is described as a skinny, vivid little boy (4). Simon is introduced to us when all of the boys are on the beach learning everyone's name. Simon dies toward the end when Jack and his tribe kill him.

Roger

Roger means spear.

Roger is Jack' right-hand man. Roger is the cruelest of the boys he is responsible for killing Piggy. Roger is described as a slight furtive boy whom no one knew, who kept to himself with an inner intensity of avoidance and secrecy (). We meet Roger when everyone is on the beach meeting each other. No one really likes Roger because he is so cruel.

Samneric

Sam and Eric are two twins that do everything together. Without each other they are incapable of very much. But because they are always together everyone thinks of them as one person so they are called Samneric. They are described as two bullet headed boys with hair like tow (1). Sam and Eric are some of the first boys that show up after Ralph blows the conch.

Setting

The story takes place on an island in the Pacific Ocean. The author tells us that the island was roughly boat-shaped (). At the low end are the jungle and the orchards, which rise up to the treeless and rocky mountain ridge. The places the author names are the reef, lagoon, and the mountain. After the boys are on the island on the island for a while they explore these places, the orchids is where the boys can have as much fruit as they want and the mountain is where they build the fire in case a ship passes by they will see the smoke. This story takes place in the 140's.

Point of View

In the lord of the flies the point of view shifts several times. For most of the story we see events through the eyes of the boys. Sometimes it's through Ralph's eyes that we watch, other times its Piggy's or Simon's eyes. (Inside story)

And sometimes the author gives information that doesn't have anything to do with the boys. Some examples are when the parachutist lands on the island (5) or when the sea drags Simon's body away (15). (Outside story-limited)

The only biased that I could see is that the author put Ralph's point of view in more than the other boys. I think the effect is that it showed how each boy matured from the time they were on the island and when they left the island.

Plot/Action of the Story

A group of boys have been dropped on a tropical island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean; their plane has been shot down. Ralph and Piggy meet first and they find the conch and Ralph blows it and the rest of the boys came to them (7-17). After everybody is introduced, the boys vote Ralph as leader. Then Ralph, Jack, and Simon find the first pig but unable to kill it. Then the boys first find out about the Beast (5). Ralph decides if they want to be rescued then they must build a fire (8). Jack and his choir let the fire go out when they went hunting and a ship passed the island but didn't know anyone was on the island because the fire was out (65). A parachutist lands on the island when the boys were asleep (5). Samneric got Ralph because they said the Beast followed them when they were watching the fire (8). Ralph, Jack, Simon, and the rest of the boys go out to hunt the Beast (101). And Piggy stays with the littleuns. The boys see the Beast (11). Jack decides he isn't going to be under Ralph's rule anymore (17). Simon talks to the Lord of the Flies (14). Jack and his followers kill Simon (15-154). Ralph, Piggy, Samneric, and some of the others go out to find Jack and his followers because they stole Piggy's glasses (17). Roger kills Piggy (180-181). Samneric told Ralph that Roger sharpened a stick at both ends and Jack's tribe was going to kill him tomorrow (10). A ship comes to the island and rescues Ralph and the littluns.

Style

Yes, the author's word choice does call attention to itself. When the author wants the action to move slowly, he uses long sentences that slow the pace down. "The first rhythm that they became used to was the slow swing from down to quick dusk. They accepted the pleasures of morning, the right sun, the whelming seat sweet air, as a time when play was good and life so full that hope was not necessary and therefore forgotten." (58) Those long sentences are intended to make us feel like the boys did when it was really slow going on the island. Yes, Golding shows no sentimentality about Piggy's death as he gives the gruesome details of Piggy's twitching on the rocks.

Theme

The need for civilization- The most obvious of the themes is mans need for civilization. The story shows that laws and rules, policeman and schools are necessary to keep the dark side of human nature inline. I didn't know before that if kids were stranded on an island with no adults the kids would mature really fast, and I didn't know that kids could be smart enough to make rules and keep the fire going like they did. To me this became obvious at the very beginning. I believe the strongest of the themes is power because each of the boys used a certain type of power. The fear of the unknown I think can be supported with the greatest amount of evidence because the island revolves around the boy's terror of the Beast.

What is the Tao Te Ching?

What is the Tao Te Ching? To begin, we will start with the history of the Tao Te Ching. The Tao Te Ching is a series of 81 poems. These poems are based on the nature of the Tao, the experience of Taoist monks, and the transformation of a Taoist into an enlightened master. The Tao Te Ching was written by Lao-tzu around the third century BC. Not much is known about Lao-tzu. As Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia states, he was a Chinese philosopher and the founder of Taoism. He was born in the province of Henan and was a court librarian. All of this is known only according to Chinese tradition. We do know that the Tao Te Ching is by far one of the most translated Chinese literary works. The basic understanding of the book is that it teaches "the way" or "Tao". This understanding is realized through the recognition and acceptance of nothingness.

Our next look will be at what the words Tao Te Ching mean. Tao literally translated means "the way". But, this can also be known as "the path", "to be the way", or "to move along the way", and finally "you become the path". The word Te literally means "power". This can also be known as our latent and inner power, and the power of one who follows the way. Another important word in Taoism is Wu Wei. Wu Wei literally means, "not doing". But, the real definition of Wu Wei is effortlessness. Or better stated as the principle of effortlessness. Which basically means do exactly what is needed, nothing more and nothing less, waste nothing in our efforts. Another important part of Taoism is the belief of Yin And Yang. Yin and Yang are opposites, which are interconnected for eternity. Some of the literal translations are that Yin means lunar and Yang means solar. Also, Yin is cool and Yang is warm, Yin is passive and Yang is active, the list could go on forever and these were just a few examples.

Buy custom What is the Tao Te Ching? term paper

The work of Lao-tzu on the Tao Te Ching was not meant to be taken literally; in that respect, it is very different from the Christian's Bible. The Tao Te Ching is a comprehensive guide to life. And maybe the word "guide" is used improperly here. The Tao Te Ching shows a person the direction in which to head, but the person must find it for his/herself. The Tao Te Ching is only pointing in the right direction, you must follow your own path. So, if we take the word guide to follow from the previous definition then it is appropriate. This guide is full of philosophical and mystical beliefs on how to approach life, its situations, and its complications. Forming out of Taoism are many sacred sciences. One of which is, Feng Shui, the belief that landscape and home design influence health and fortune. In Feng Shui, they believe that your house should be laid out a certain way and that you should sleep a certain way and that all these put together will help you to influence your health and fortune. Feng Shui literally means wind and water. It is the ancient Chinese study of the natural environment. The basic principles of Feng Shui are Yin and Yang, the five elements, East and West compass directions, the solar system, and the environment. Feng Shui is used to determine the most favorable location for anyone in their environment; which is determined by the year of birth, their environment, and by the movements of the solar system. Another sacred science is Qigong; Qigong is the science of practicing Taoism. Qigong deals with subtle energies, Taoist healing, acupuncture, acupressure and massage. This part of Taoism is very closely related to shamanism and its use of herbs along with its healing practices. In acupuncture the Chinese meridian system is used for healing. The Taoists believe that we have an invisible energy system and this is what the Chinese meridian system is based around. Acupuncture is done by inserting needles into specific sites in the body to relieve pain, to provide anesthesia, or to treat illness. Acupressure is done much in the same way as acupuncture except that it is done with the hands instead of needles. The hands are used to supply energy from the fingertips to key locations of the Chinese meridian system. These key locations in the Chinese meridian system are called charkas. Chakra's are energy centers located throughout the body. In this system they believe that the energy in these chakra's must be regulated to maintain proper health.

The Tao Te Ching is a guide to problem solving. It helps us with all the questions that arise during our normal daily life. The Tao Te Ching tells us how to work with other people, how to lead others, how to get answers, how to deal with success and failure. The Tao Te Ching is really a guide to life that follows a Taoist philosophy. The Tao Te Ching even tells us how to relax. It says that we should take our concern and put it to the side for a moment and meditate. This will allow us to find our answers free from worry and anxiety. According to the Tao Te Ching, when dealing with success and failure, we should remain grounded because success and failure are always changing in this world. We should not hope for either success or failure, we should be prepared for it when it comes. The Tao Te Ching even tells us what a good education is really comprised of. The Tao Te Ching says that good education is teaching people how to learn, how to unlearn, and how to remain open. The Tao Te Ching tells us that we should not remain in a rigid pattern that we should always be learning and searching for patterns, we should be cautious of our opinions and open to new ideas. Once we accomplish all of this then we can find our own way through life. We must not forget the teachers either, they should avoid being clever and knowing all the answers. Teachers must have learned to find their own way through life before they can teach others to find their own true nature and their own way through life. So, according to the Tao Te Ching, scholastic education is not a good education, rather it is a compilation of facts and theories. These theories will not help guide us through life.

The real question here is what does the Tao Te Ching mean to us? This question cannot be answered by me or by anyone else for that matter. Each person will take their own meanings from the Tao Te Ching and find their own path. The Tao Te Ching is just a guide for us to look at; our path through life will be determined by our understanding of the Tao Te Ching. The Tao Te Ching has some interesting philosophies and ideas that all cultures should look at and analyze for themselves. Anyone can learn from what was written by Lao Tzu in these ancient writings. The Tao Te Ching will allow you to become a better person in life and in death. Even if you are not a Taoist, the writings of the Tao Te Ching can give you some insight on life, its complications, and how to deal with them.

Please note that this sample paper on What is the Tao Te Ching? is for your review only. Where is the first place you go when you wake up in the morning? What is the first thing you do when you use the bathroom? How many times a day do you use the bathroom? People don't seem to realize how important the bathroom is to our day to day activities. Where do you go when you have to relieve yourself? The bathroom is a very interesting place once you look at it closely. All its components are there to make the user's life a lot easier, whether it is used for relieving or cleansing. The toilet, the sink, and the optional shower or bathtub are what create a bathroom.

First of all we have the toilet. Typically made from porcelain, the toilet is armed with a handle and a bowl full of water. The toilet is the main attraction of the bathroom. Its soul purpose is so people can relieve themselves. When people ask if they can use the bathroom, the toilet is typically the first thing they have in their minds. Its capabilities allow it to make stuff vanish without a trace. With a push of the handle all waste, weather it be solid or liquid, is sent long distance, never to be seen or heard from again.

The sink which usage typically goes after the usage of the toilet, is used either to refresh the user or is used to cleanse the user. Sinks come in many different shapes and sizes. Some are round, some are oval, some are square, some stand up right, some are tucked into a cabinet. This is where all the grooming takes place typically brushing your teeth and combing your hair. Normally the sink is equipped with handles or knobs that allows its user to adjust the temperature and the pressure of the water being release. Similar to the toilet the sink also outputs water into a bowl, and the content of the water is also sent long distance through plumbing fixtures.

Last we have an optional addition to the bathroom which is the shower or bathtub. Having a shower or bathtub depends on how your bathroom was originally designed, whether it was made to be a full bathroom or a half bathroom. With a full bathroom the shower or bathtub is included, but with a half bathroom you only get the toilet and the sink. Like the sink the shower consists of knobs or handles which releases and adjust the temperature of the water being release. The showerhead is where the water comes out from. Comparing the sink with the shower we see that both were made for similar uses. Both are there to help the user cleanse themselves. The shower was made so that users have a fast and efficient way to cleanse the whole body. The bath tub on the other hand was made so that users have the opportunity to bathe themselves, allowing them to cleanse themselves in a slow and timely manner. Excess water also flows through the plumbing fixtures as with the toilet and the sink.

Write my Essay on Best seat in the house for me

It is possible to live without a bathroom, but the inconveniences are endless. Without a toilet one would have to relieve themselves in the open with the waste, whether it is liquid or solid, being visible. Without the sink, one would have to cleanse themselves with cups and the source of water would be the river, a lake or a stream. Without a shower or a tub, one would have to cleanse the body with leaves and buckets in the lake or river. All this is very tedious and not efficient. This is why the bathroom is such an important room in our daily lives.

Marriage is based on love, trust, and respect. One marriage that does not fit this model is that of Penelope and Odysseus in the Odyssey by Homer. Odysseus went away to fight and was gone for twenty years, Penelope his wife, always had hope that he would come home some day, and never took up with anyone else, she stayed loyal. However after twenty years she decided that maybe it would be best to start looking for a new suitor.

The story then progresses with the return of Odysseus however Penelope is not told that he is back, instead he poses as a beggar who she so kindly takes in. There is however the question of whether or not she knows that it is really him. I believe she did and I also believe that she was in her own way testing him by not saying she knew that it was him. There are many reasons why I think she knew it was him. One reason I believe she did this because he always tested her when they were together. Therefore they tested each other which makes us question their relationship and how good it was.

The first event that took place when he returned was the way he told Penelope that Odysseus was back, "…Zeus be my witness, and the table set for strangers and the hearth to which I've come- the lord Odysseus, I tell you, is present now, already on this island!". This was the first that they had heard about this. He then described himself to Penelope as he was pretending to be a beggar. He told Penelope that he saw Odysseus and so he described him for her and the description was perfect, and he resembled himself very closely, therefore she had to have had some clue that it was him. When your married to a person, and they go away for a while, you have to recognize them when they return even if they just look familiar to you. When he told her the story of how he had seen her husband and then described him so perfectly, she looked at the 'stranger' and wept. In my view along with the view of many others, she knew then that its was her husband but did not say anything. This could be because she was afraid that if she was wrong that it would make her look foolish and so she kept quiet and just let the beggar stay. He was noble and she had hoped and prayed that she was right. She didn't say anything and waited for him to give her more reason to believe that it was him.

She also could not completely believe that it was him because she assumed that if he were finally home that she would have known about it. Then she began to hear that he had indeed returned home and was around the area in which they lived. This was around the same time that the beggar came around, which is another reason that she believed it could be him. She wanted it to be him but could not be one hundred percent sure that it was actually him. I think she was scared, because he had been gone for so long. If he was back like everyone was saying he was, she wanted them to be able to talk and pick up from where they left off. She did not want there to be any bad feelings between them or secrets which there were, but that comes later on. She wanted her husband back, completely.

Odysseus tried to hide his return from his wife as long as possible, to kind of test her. He wanted to see what she would say about his return, and wanted to see if she had been loyal, and what she had done while he was away. He was partially successful for a little while, and then one wrong move almost spoiled his plan to. There was this scar that Odysseus had on his leg from boar years ago. The nurse had noticed it first, and did not call attention to it in front of Penelope because Odysseus stopped her before she could by threatening her. This surely would have given it away and made Penelope realize that it was him.

Once he had been back and escaped the scar problem, he had also seen the suitors that were lined up to take Penelope's hand in marriage, and he knew he had to put a stop to it. He did what the men had to do, to prove themselves and their abilities to Penelope. He proved to be the best, and like Odysseus as well. After the competition Odysseus knew it was not yet over and that he would have to do something to keep the suitors away from his wife. He did the unthinkable and killed the suitors before they had a chance to get to Penelope. After this was done Penelope's suspicions grew stronger, because only her husband could do such a thing, for a good reason. So this was not entirely a smart move on his part, and one of three events that gave it away that he was who he was. When this had happened the nurse had went upstairs to tell Penelope that he had returned after all these years, and she in return told the nurse

What is this mockery you wake me up to tell me, breaking in on my sweet spell of sleep? I had not dozed away so tranquilly since my lord went to war, on that ill wind to Ilion. (book lines 14-1). This gives the impression that she did believe it was him, and just did not say anything. Later she wakes and rejoices to this news, still with a small disbelief but not as much as earlier. This is when she really wakes up to the fact that it really could be him.

Shortly after, she speaks to him and they go to the bedroom where he sees that the bed has been moved and he cries out, asking who moved his bed, and this is when she finally realized that it was indeed him. She ran and threw her arms around him with joy kissing him. Later they consummated their love in that same bed.

Throughout this ordeal, they tested each other. She in some sense knew it was him, but did not tell anyone that she knew because she was testing him to see how long he would hide it from her. He was testing her, to see what she was like while he was away, by not telling her that it was him. They were both very deceitful and dishonest, but clever. This does not say much about their relationship if they have to be like that toward one another. Now he also kept things from her about his trip, like the women he had met and fooled around with so-to-speak. This guilt always haunted him however and laid on him very heavily. They do not have a very open relationship, it is full of lies and it is very bizarre. This is not a healthy relationship, however some people might argue that they needed that deceit in order to communicate with each other.

There are many different point of views on this subject. My point of view is that Penelope and Odysseus were not made to have a perfect or even healthy relationship. I think Homer needed some drama in his epic and so he had to think up this dysfunctional relationship. He needed controversy in this epic and Penelope and Odysseus' relationship was just what he needed. It is very interesting to try and analyze, because there could be many different explanations, and no one explanation is right.

A Stormy Night.

It was the winter of 18. It had been good weather for a long time. Then the storm broke lose. The wind was strong and the waves were high. I dont remember it because I was only one years old, but Ive heard a lot of stories about the tempest.

The house above ours to the left got its roof torn of, and the fence around it was also torn apart.

Chimneys fell off a lot of houses. Windows were broken by stuff flying around. Many roofs were torn off houses. Some ships got into trouble of all the big waves. Boats were crushed at the quay, and cars flipped over by the wind. All this happened in the village of New York. All these things ive mentioned above happened around the States. It was a huge fall in barometric pressure, my mother drawed a line on our barometre to remember the tempest.

Do my essay on A stormy night. CHEAP !

Our "sheephouse" was taken by the waves, luckily there was only one sheep in the "sheephouse". The sheep we lost washed up at the beach of Washington.

In our village we have two ancient vikinghouses near the sea they were full of water from the sea. It had been good weather before the storm. Like a wise man said once, "It is quiet before the storm".
